Worth The Risque!

Risque is a great toy for someone who has some anal experience under their belt. It's simple to use, easy to care for, and is packed with 10 different functions; there should be a little something for everyone! Do use caution around water since the toy isn't actually waterproof, and be careful if you're a beginner to anal play. Overall, this toy is a great purchase, even if the vibrations are a little on the weak side.

Use

Risque from Cal Exotics is a vibrating anal toy that's designed to be worn like a plug. The length and shape of the toy makes it a poor choice for thrusting, but a great choice to simply leave in and enjoy!

This probe turns your regular solo time into a much more intense experience! Before use, make sure to apply a generous amount of your favorite water-based lubricant, and carefully slip it in place. Once it's in place, it stays in very well. The base of the toy isn't large enough that it covers the vaginal opening, so women can easily simulate double penetration with the addition of another vibrator or dildo.

The Risque can be used in a variety of positions: lying down, standing up, even sitting shouldn't be much of an issue. With the location of the function button, you might find that sitting on a hard surface makes the functions change, but this will all depend on how it fits between your butt cheeks.

While women could use this for vaginal stimulation, it's really not that exciting when used that way. It may reach your G-spot depending on your anatomy, but it's unlikely because the shape of the toy is very straight. If you do decide to try this toy out vaginally, make sure to sterilize it before switching orifices. This truly is best used as an anal toy. The same goes for men and the P-spot: how well it stimulates will all depend on your anatomy.

Aside from solo use, this toy can be used with a partner. The base of the toy isn't long enough that it should get in the way during vaginal intercourse, and the vibrations can be lightly felt through the vaginal walls, slightly stimulating both partners. The toy can also be used inside the male partner during intercourse and should stay in place without concern.

While you could wear this as you go about your day, someone may hear the vibrations when it's on. This is best used in the comfort of your home or in an area where there are no concerns about being sound discreet. While the noise level is on the quieter side, it still might attract some attention to someone who is unaware.

Cal Exotics has labeled this toy as 'Waterproof,' but in reality, it's only splash-proof. There should be no concerns about using this toy in the shower, but fully submerging the toy is highly discouraged.

Material / Texture

Risque is made from two different materials; silicone and plastic.

The area that is inserted into the body is made from silicone, which rates a 10/10 on the Eden Material Safety Scale. It's one of the safest materials to have for a sex toy and boasts some awesome safety features: it's made from food-grade material, and is hypo-allergenic, latex free, nonporous, and phthalates free.

The surface of the toy doesn't have any texture to it. It isn't sticky or tacky: it's totally smooth, but does have a slight drag which causes it to collect lint - lots of lint. For this reason, always make sure to wash before and after each use. The tip of the toy has a good amount of bend and squish to it, and almost feels hollow inside. After the tip, there's a bulge in the center that has no movement to it and only a small amount of give, since it's directly over the internal workings of the toy. There is a slight seam that goes down the length of the toy, but can't be felt during use.

The base of the toy is made from plastic, which rates an 8/10 on the Eden scale. It also boasts the same safety features as the silicone: made from food-grade material, hypo-allergenic, latex free, nonporous, and phthalates free.

The surface of the plastic is totally smooth, having no texture at all aside from the 'open' and 'close' areas on the battery compartment. The material is very rigid, aside from the function button, which is located directly in the center of the base. The button is also made from plastic, but the only movement it has is the movement it makes when pressed down.

There is a decent amount of give to the tip of the toy, making it a little easier to insert. The surface is okay for a beginner, but the size is what makes it a poor choice for someone totally new to anal play.

When opening the box for the first time, there was a slight 'new' plastic smell to the toy. It wasn't overpowering or an issue, but it was still obvious. After washing and leaving out of the package, the scent was no longer present.

Design / Shape / Size

Risque comes in three different colors that should appeal to a wide range of people: pink, blue, and black. Each of the colors is nice and deep, and is very attractive looking.

The design of this toy is very common considering its use, and is an acceptable size for intermediate to more advanced anal toy users. The size is rather large for someone who has no anal experience, and could end up causing more discomfort than pleasure. Though the tip is a very accommodating size that should be easy for just about anyone to insert, the large bulge in the middle of the toy is what prevents it from being a good choice for a beginner.

The tip of the toy, at its widest, is 1" in diameter, but it narrows to 3/4" at the bottom. The narrow area helps to hold the toy in place while you gear up to insert the larger bulge. The narrow area gradually widens, and the center of the bulge is 1 1/2" in diameter. That is the widest part of the toy. While that might not seem like much, it's a good jump from the first section of the toy. At the end of the bulge, it narrows back to 1" in diameter, which is where it then connects with the flared base of the toy. The base on the bottom is rounded, not flat, and is 1 3/4" wide and 3 3/8" long. The total length is 5", but only 4" is insertable.

The look is very non-threatening, and it doesn't have a realistic shape to it, but would be hard to imagine it being anything other than a sex toy if someone were to see it lying around. Suitable for travel thanks to its compact size, it would fit easily in a purse, backpack, or suitcase, but it might be more noticeable if getting your bags checked at the airport.

Performance

Risque is powered by 2 AAA batteries, which aren't included. The battery compartment is on the bottom of the toy and has the words 'open' and 'close' on either side of the cap, with little arrows that indicate which way to push it. When the cap is removed, the battery compartment shows you which way to insert the batteries, and there's a small black ribbon which also makes them easy to remove. Once the batteries are inserted, line up the tabs on the cap with the toy and slide it back into place.

In the center of the cap is the only button on the toy. It's oval and says, '10X' on it, for the 10 different functions this toy has. The button is slightly raised from the rest of the cap and controls turning the toy on, cycling through the patterns, and turning the toy off. Each time you press the button you hear a little click, which makes it obvious that you've changed the setting.

The first press of the button turns the toy on, and it's automatically on the first setting. Each press brings you to the next setting and, at any point, no matter which setting you're on, you can simply hold the button down for a few seconds to turn the toy off. The next time the toy is turned on, it starts off on the first setting and hasn't held your place.

The settings are:
1) Low Steady
2) Medium Steady
3) High Steady
4) Slow Pulse
5) Medium Pulse
6) Fast Pulse/Low to Medium Steady
7) Quick Pulse/High Slow Pulse
8) High Steady/Escalating
9) Varying Pulses
10) High Steady/Quick Pulse

The power is on the medium side of the scale and produces a deep buzz. It's not rumbly, but it's not a light buzz that causes your fingers to become numb should you be holding the toy while it's on. It probably won't satisfy someone who needs a lot of power, but it will be enough for the average user. The vibrations travel well through the entire piece and feel just as powerful at the tip of the toy as they do in the center bulge. The vibrations can also be felt through the base of the toy, but not as strongly as the insertable area.

The button is easy to press while in use, but shouldn't accidentally change settings unless you're sitting on a hard surface; even that will depend on how you're sitting and where the toy rests inside of you. The base is a little on the wide side, which may be a problem for some. Always check the measurements of the toy before purchasing to ensure it will match your anatomy.

When on the highest settings, this toy can easily be heard from under the covers and might be heard from behind a closed door while inserted, but someone would have to be trying to listen for the sound in order to hear it. When it's not inserted, it very obviously can be heard through a closed door, so use caution if you need toys that are sound discreet.

Though Cal Exotics claims that this toy is waterproof, it's really not. After being fully submerged for a few minutes and completely drying the outside of it, there was a small amount of water that had leaked all the way around the edge of the battery compartment. It didn't seep in enough that it touched the batteries themselves, but it was still disappointing. Use this toy as though it were splash-proof to ensure the life of your toy.

Care and Maintenance

This toy can be cleaned using warm water and antibacterial soap or your favorite sex toy cleaner. To give it a deeper clean, especially if sharing with a partner or switching between orifices, using a 10% bleach solution will do the trick. Never boil the toy or put it into your dishwasher, since there are internal working parts and it could become ruined.

Since this toy is made from silicone, only water-based lubricant should be used with it. Something thicker like Maximus, System Jo H2O, or Uranus would do a fine job. Silicone- and oil-based lubricants could damage the surface of your toy and make it unusable. There are lots of water-based lubricants that are designed for anal play.

This toy doesn't come with storage, so you'll need to come up with something on your own. The packaging is too flimsy for long term use and will eventually need to be broken down and recycled. Using a small toy storage pouch or a quart sized plastic Ziploc bag would work well. It's important to keep this toy away from toys of similar materials, since they don't always get along well and could become ruined.

Packaging

Nothing about the packaging of this toy is discreet. The plastic is mostly clear, making the toy completely visible. It has some white foggy areas on the box as well, but there's lots of wording about the toy. The box is tasteful in the sense that there's no nudity, but it's not something that is appealing to look at.

One side of the box has all of the important copyright information, and the other shows color images of the toy and gives a short blip on how to use the button on the bottom of the toy. The back contains only the most basic information about the toy and is displayed in five languages.

When the box is opened, you pull a tray out that contains the toy. The thin plastic is perfectly formed so that the toy stays in place well, but is also easy to remove. Once the tray is removed, you'll see a paper in the bottom of the box. It doesn't contain a lot of information, but does tell a little bit about the warnings and how to insert the batteries. It's nothing important, and both the box and information can be disposed of.
