How natural is natural? My first look at mineral makeup.

If you are not concerned about the ingredients then this set performs great for the price. Please look into the ingredients and decide for yourself. I also suggest trying it out at home first in case it does bother you.
Long lasting. Affordable. Portable.
Not all natural ingredients. Possible irritant and allergy concerns.

extremely useful review

This eyeshadow set is great for someone who likes to blend multiple colors when applying eyeshadows. The color options can be changed up for day or evening. It is packaged conveniently for anyone who likes to take their makeup with them on the go. The rollerball applicator is so much easier to apply then having to take along brushes or sponge applicators. There is no plastic lid that's going to break off.

Regarding the ingredients list, I first want to point out that the ingredient list on the product page has spelling errors. I am including information on each ingredient listed on the actual packaging. I have chosen to focus much of this review on the ingredients. The safety of makeup ingredients have been widely debated and there has been reported allergies to mineral makeup specifically. Each person reacts differently to ingredients and we must also each make our own decision as to the validity of the information from each side of the debate.

The good news is that this makeup does NOT contain phthalates, sulfates, triclosan, or parabens. The ingredients that it does contain are pretty much all up for debate.

Mica is a well-known ingredient in mineral makeup. This naturally occurring mineral reduces the appearance of fine lines. Though it is commonly debated to be an allergen in mineral makeup, it is more likely to merely be an irritant for some people. It is not the mica itself, rather the ingredients that are sometimes used for coating. If a coating was used in this eye shadow it does not appear to be listed as an ingredient. Though they are not required to list it.

Titanium Dioxide is a natural occurring mineral which is absorbent and acts as a natural sunscreen. Some studies point to it being carcinogenic; other studies have found it to be safe.

Iron Oxides are used in makeup as a color additive. Though it is naturally occurring, the forms used in makeup are synthesized. However, since the synthesizing process may include iron oxide from the earth it may include heavy metals. If you trust the FDA to monitor this then you can consider the levels safe.
Red 40 Lake is an artificial dye and has been known to cause allergies.

Phenoxyethanol is an artificial preservative. This particular preservative is LESS toxic than many other alternatives.

Ethylhexyglycerin is an alternative to parabens. It is not entirely a natural ingredient however. There is not much safety data on ethylhexglycerin, but it has been known to cause contact dermatitis in people with sensitive skin.

Ethical considerations: I did not find anything indicative of non-vegan ingredients. The packaging states its made in Taiwan. I do not see a recycling logo on any of the packaging. They do not test on animals.

Texture / Consistency / Thickness / Viscosity

I usually use pressed eye shadows and apply them with makeup brushes. This is the first time I have used a rollerball applicator. I found the powder to be too powdery. The consistency made it messy. The particles ended up on my cheek and under my eyes. I would suggest holding a tissue underneath your eye when applying. I inevitably ended up with the powder irritating my eyes.

If I could of kept it out of my eyes I would otherwise not even feel it on my skin. It is easy to apply but does require blending with your finger or a brush. I was very impressed with it's staying power.
    • Smooth

Taste / Aroma

It has a faint feminine smell to it that was not noticeable after applying. Taste? I'm not tasting this one!
    • Light smell

This stayed on all day. It washed off easily with my regular face wash. I did not need to use makeup remover. It also washed off easily with just water and a washcloth.

It does contain dyes so I imagine it may stain fabric.

I definitely liked how long it lasted. I tend to rub my eyes throughout the day, yet I could still see each individual color at the end of the day. I'm not one to constantly reapply makeup. The only makeup I take with me on the go is lipgloss. Since this set is so portable I did throw the main color in my bag and touched it up a few times just to make it look a little fresher.

If you tip over the container the powder spills out and can be messy. The vials close tightly, are small, and pretty for easy portability. The four containers come packaged in a paperboard box that can be disposed of. The vials are see through so you easily know which color you are grabbing. They are each imprinted with matte gold colored lettering and Bella Il Fiore branding. The caps are shiny gold color. At the base of each vial is a removable pink sticker with the name of the color and the Bell Il Fiore website address.

The colors are:
Left Bank (brown)
Pretty Pink (rose)
Halo (gold)
Luna (silvery white)
    • Easy to use / dispense
    • Messy dispenser
    • Travel friendly

Special Features

This eyeshadow is unique in that it is applied with a self contained rollerball applicator. The small containers are very convenient for travel. The eye shadows contain mineral ingredients which provide a natural sunscreen and also reduce the look of fine lines.

Personal comments

Your going to want to blend after applying. I suggest a makeup brush since brushes are gentler on skin than your fingers or a sponge applicator.

I find that some eye shadows unfortunately accentuate wrinkles on my eyelids. This did not do that at all.

I only gave this 3 stars because I am not able to continue to wear it due to it irritating my eyes. I didn't give it a lower rating because if it doesn't irritate your eyes or skin it would be a great product for you.
It's long lasting and convenient.

My photography abilities are severely lacking and I do not own a real camera so this picture does not show the colors very well. I've included it anyways because I think it does show an example of how to blend several colors and create shading.

When I put very little on and made sure to follow it with a large makeup brush it still stayed on all day and it did not irritate me. However, when I applied it more heavily for a dramatic look I ended up having to take it off within the hour due to itchy watery eyes. I don't know if that was due to irritating ingredients or just the fact that it is so powdery.

I had trouble with using all four colors at once and it being to my taste. The gold and the white don't pair well together in my opinion. Any other combination looked nice. I do not usually wear gold. I was surprised that I liked that color. It creates a somewhat bronzing effect. If you are not sure if this color combination is right for you, I have included a link at the bottom of this review for the other set that is available.
Follow-up commentary
Due to the eye irritation, I gave this eyeshadow set to a friend who it has worked for. My skin is just too sensitive. It was a good learning experience for me in researching product ingredients.

    Excellent review!

I use bare minerals and I notice this is lacking zinc oxide which is not only water-proof but also an anti-irritant which might have made this product less irritating to your eyes. This rollerball set also includes other ingredients not found in bare minerals. It seems like it was a fair attempt, but you are correct, some of the ingredients seem a bit questionable. It's unfortunate that you still have to use a brush.

Thank you so much for all the helpful details in this review. I think I'd like to try this for myself as roller ball eye shadow sounds great on the go. But I'll have to be extra careful not to spill it.

Thank you for the break-down of ingredients. People need to be aware of the chemicals they're putting on their body.
