Wait Long Enough and the Cream Will Come

Overall, I am pleased with this shaving cream from JO. While I don't agree with everything they say on the package, it didn't cause me any irritation and produced a very smooth and clean shave. I didn't like that it takes a while to turn from a gel into a cream, but I do like that it doesn't lather a whole bunch. I could see where and what I was shaving a lot better and ended up not injuring myself like I have with other overly slick shaving serums.

Use

I go through shaving gels really quick since I am kind of OCD about my nether parts being baby butt smooth all the time. Most bottles I have been using are about 4 ounces. I was excited to see that this Shaving Cream from JO is double that size. It's an all over body shaving gel, but I prefer it for the bikini area. Pure Body Shaving Cream is from the JO Women line and is made for those with sensitive skin. This product advertises that it is going to give you a smooth shave with no bumps, irritation, or rashes. It also claims that it will leave you with soft, silky, and conditioned skin. I found that this product did do as advertised, but I had to be patient. The lathered creme takes a while to appear after application. It did make for a smooth, pain-free shave, and smooth skin afterward. I don't know how "Pure" it is though. The Aloe ingredient gives it a smell and it also contains some less than desirable ingredients.

Ingredients: Hydroxyethylcellulose, Glycerin, Sodium laureth sulfate, Isopropyl alcohol, Aloe vera, Tween 20, Carbomer, Fragrance(Aroma), Di Water, Methylparaben, Propyl paraben

Ingredient details/breakdown:

Hydroxyethylcellulose is a thickening agent that helps make the gel into a creme. Glycerin and aloe vera are used as moisturizers and skin softening agents. Sodium laureth sulfate is a foaming agent that is usually harmless at small doses, but can be irritating to some. If you know you have an issue with this ingredient, consult your doctor before use. Isopropyl alcohol is used to prevent infection if you happen to nick yourself during shaving. It too can cause irritation. Ever rub it on a cut? STING! At such a small amount in this product, it won't likely cause any irritation. Tween 20 is a funny named ingredient if I've ever heard one, but it is a spreading agent. It helps the gel to spread out to the areas you want it to be applied to. Carbomer is what actually makes the liquids into gels during production. The fragrance is interesting since this is supposed to be fragrance free. The only fragrence I can detect is form the ingredients themselves. Di water stands for distilled water. This means the water used is free of impurities. And lastly are the paraben ingredients of Methylparaben and Propyl paraben which are preservatives. They are used in MANY of the foods you consume today and are considered "generally recognized as safe" (GRAS). Propyl paraben can cause allergic reactions for some people. Both paraben ingredients have cancer causing properties at higher doses. The research is lacking. So there ya have it...not exactly pure. Hygiene

Texture / Consistency / Thickness / Viscosity

This is advertised as a cream, but it really is a gel. It requires water and rubbing to make it into a cream. The gel is thick and opaque, but comes out fairly easily, a lot like shampoo. It smooths around easily, even without water, and even more easily with. If you rub it around for half a minute or so, it will turn into a cream, but it takes awhile. It doesn't foam or lather up a lot, but will create a bit of a cushion for shaving.

Taste / Aroma

This Body Shaving Cream is supposed to be scented PURE, meaning scent free. It sort of is. If you open the bottle it has a strong aroma of aloe and rubbing alcohol. I did not notice this scent while using it though. It also didn't make my skin smell this way. I did not taste this, and neither should you.

Performance

I primarily use this for the bikini area. I used about a quarter sized pool and started to rub it where I was going to shave. It was easy to get out of the bottle. At first, I was thinking that this gel wasn't going to help me shave at all. But soon with water, after about half a minute, it started to lather just slightly. You really need water to shave with this product. It doesn't work outside of the tub or shower like the foam in a can shaving creams do.

After I spent the time getting myself covered, I started to shave. The razor glided over my skin smoothly and without any pulling of the hairs. I actually started to appreciate that there wasn't a huge amount of lather and that I could semi see through the opaque gel/cream. I could better gauge if I was nicking myself. With those white puffy creams, you don't really know unless you feel yourself being cut or all of a sudden you see a streak of red in your white lather.

I wasn't sure I was getting a close enough shave with this creme so I spent a little more time than I normally do doing my shaving routine. It was easy to wash off the remaining cream. Afterward, I towel dried myself and within a few minutes gave myself the smooth over. I couldn't feel any stubble and was convinced that this creme did its job well. I also didn't notice any rashing or irritation. When I rinsed myself off under the hot water, I did feel stinging that I don't normally feel, but it only lasted for a moment. I even saw that I had a few small nicks. These were not irritated by the cream and went away fast. I also noticed that my skin felt REALLY smooth. I'd say that this creme is a pretty good buy as long as you are not allergic or sensitive to any of the ingredients. I wish it had a fragrance though. I'm not a fan of it being scent free.

Packaging

I really like the packaging. For one, it's plastic and isn't going to rust in the shower or produce gross orange rings on your tub. It is a tall and slender bottle, that also won't take up much shelf room. The bottle contains 8 fluid ounces which is a hell of a lot and a steal for the price. It has a white, plastic, push to pop open top that is easy to use even with slippery hands. It also unscrews and completely comes off if you prefer to dispense the gel that way. The label is pretty, with shades of purple and has discreet language, this is an all over body shaving creme after all. It is very informative and has instructions in four different languages. The bottle isn't the best for travel though. It can leak slightly.
    • Can be opened with one hand
    • Discreet looking packaging
    • Recyclable
Follow-up commentary
This isn't my go to shave cream, but I still do use it. There is a LOT still left in the bottle, and for that I think I'll buy it again when it is gone because I like it enough. I have not had any major issues with it, but I realize it won't work for everyone.
