K-Y jelly - lubricant discontinued by K-Y Brand - review by I like to try harder

I have worked in the medical profession for many years and K Y Gel is the standard for most doctors’ offices. While it may serve their purpose well, there are better options for personal lubrication. K Y gel is a clear viscous lube with a consistency similar to hair gel. It has a very mild odor and taste to it, but I would not be inclined to taste it too much.

From the times I have used K Y Gel, I have found it to provide good lubrication when used right away. It does tend to dry rather quickly and become sticky with a bit of a dry crumbly residue. I like to use lube during foreplay to make sure everything is nice and slick feeling. When this is used in that manner, after a couple of minutes have passed, that sticky feeling shows up requiring more gel to be applied. It is very easy to go through a tube of this very quickly. If used in water settings (pool, hot tub, tub) it tends to wash away quickly and not give a lot of lubrication benefit, as some other water based lubes do.

Since it is water based, it is safe to use with most toys. When used with toys, the same characteristics hold true. The tendency is to dry relatively quickly, so if you put it on a vibrator or dildo and choose to start with clitoral stimulation for a couple of minutes before it is inserted; most likely you will need to reapply.

To me, K Y works, but I would choose a different water based lube. Clean-up is not too bad, but as mentioned the drying effect tends to leave a crusty residue that you have to brush off of the sheets when you are done. The problems with the drying and clean up afterwards tend to make me look elsewhere. Because I have worked in the medical field, I have a relatively endless supply of lube if I need it, but honestly I will only use it when I have nothing else available.

I still use it on occaision, but only when nothing else is available. There are better lubes out there, but this is a reliable standby that can be found nearly anywhere.
