While the taste and smell is not particularly appealing for me, the defense protection lubricant offers benefits that its competitors don't even try to mimic. Also, this product fully backs its claims, which is a rarity.
Intimate Organics offers some of the more unique lubricants on the market. The company might surprise you with both its product characteristics as well as flavors. Toasted Macadamia is just one example of an odd yet enticing flavor that I've seen from their product line. In addition, the product line includes warming lubricants, daring anal spray, and clitoral stimulating gels (just a preview of their products). In the case of the defense protection lubricant, this lubricant is meant to be both a lubricant and a barrier of sorts. While safe with condoms (and water-based), the defense protection lubricant also offers some protection against bacteria and yeast infections when not using condoms. I personally didn't receive my HPV shot series, so this is a critical selling point for this item in my opinion. The term "vegan safe" can also be used, but as I'm not vegan, I have not personally researched this product for such purposes. Finally, I'm impressed by how thick this lube is and have enjoyed it for both anal and vaginal use. However, it may need to be reapplied for anal use, and its taste keeps me from using it in situations where my mouth may later touch the affected area.
I know this is a water-based lube, but I tend to disagree with those who say it is thin in their reviews. I use some silicone lubricants that are runny, whereas this lubricant is quite thick compared to my Sliquid water-based lube. Perhaps shake the bottle to make sure all of the ingredients are well-mixed? I'm not really sure what accounts for the different opinions on this matter. I have used this lubricant anally rather comfortably several times now, though on occasion where sex is on the longer side, I have had to reapply this. I think that defense protection lubricant is also relatively easy to get out of the bottle until you are at the end. At that point, this bottle is not made to sit flatly on its head to get the last of your lubricant out. Last, but not least, this lubricant is slick and smooth. I even tested it for stickiness after a short period of time, and I found no trace of stickiness. After using it, my skin even felt a bit softer.
One of our well-known reviewers compared the smell of this to the smell of roses. I completely agree that after wiping it off, my skin has a hint of rosy smell. However, in the bottle, it's quite a bit more intense. Don't smell it in the bottle and be too off-put...the smell is not nearly as strong when this product is applied. While it may be safe to taste this, and while I did indeed taste it for review-purposes, I would not taste it again. I don't know how to describe the taste, but I will tell you that it's unattractive. Overall, if I could make this smell and taste like something else, I would. Unfortunately, the flavored lubes from this line don't have the same benefits of the defense lubricant.
I use a small portion of this lubricant for even my longer vaginal sex sessions. Perhaps it's the lube, or perhaps I'm just thoroughly warmed up after the show begins, but I haven't had to reapply for vaginal use. On the other hand, I give it about 15 to 20 minutes before I like to reapply it for anal sex. It's just absorbed a bit too easily for things to stay comfortable if there is a lot of insert, pull out, reinsert action. I haven't really had to wash it off. If there is any lingering lubricant, I generally wipe it off. It doesn't leave a residue that makes it necessary to hop right into the shower afterwards. For this reason, cuddle and snuggle-lovers will rejoice at the ability to stay in bed longer together. In the end, I only wash the area if the rose smell begins to aggravate me, and then I use warm water and soap. As far as performance goes, there's really nothing I'm going to stick in the cons list. I will save that for the smell (for some) and for the taste! As a last minute thought, this would especially appeal to anal performance in that it is much easier to pass bacteria and sexually transmitted infections through anal sex. This isn't a protect-against-all product, but it's worth a shot in your most vulnerable zone.
The 4 oz. bottle is what is being sold on EF for the defense protection lubricant. The bottle and label are green, which I would guess is to play up the vegan and organic aspects. The word "lubricant" is right on the front along with a picture of underboob to leaf-covered parts of a woman. While it's not overly inappropriate, it's not exactly discreet either. The flip-top lid is fairly typical of lubricants, but I think it always worries me in travel situations. I'd pack this in a plastic bag and then in your luggage if you're going to be traveling with it. The back of the label boasts "Doesn't disrupt healthy microflora..." and other little tid-bits of useful information. It also states that this lubricant can be used with the Intimate Organics enhancing gels, which I like the idea of.
This is the list of ingredients:
Aqua (Water)
Chondrus Crispus (Carrageenan)
Phenoxyethanol
Benzoic Acid
Phenethyl Alcohol
PPG-2 Methyl Ether
Methylisothiazolinone
Psidium Guajava Fruit Extract
Certified Organic Lycium Barbarum Fruit Extract
Organic Cymbopogon Schoenanthus Extract
Certified Organic Aloe Barbedensis Leaf Extract
I've noticed a couple of ingredients that were included in another review that are not in the ingredients list on the back of my bottle, so just be cautious that the formula may be slightly different between older and newer bottles. Come to think of it, that might account for the texture change!
I would call the protection against yeast infections, some sexually transmitted infections, things like genital warts, etc. a special feature of this product. I haven't found another product on the site that boasts of those benefits. I would also say that having an ingredients list that doesn't have any commonly avoided ingredients on it is pretty fantastic. As for causing any sensations, the defense protection lubricant does not warm, cool, tingle, or any of that jive. However, as stated, it can be used with enhancing gels from the same company that can give it that extra kick if that's what you need! *laughing at the mental image of lubricant granting a kick in the crotch*
Follow-up commentaryI still like it9 days after original review
If they made this taste better, I'd never use another brand of lube again. It's peace of mind for me at this point as I have recently had a friend diagnosed with cervical cancer. I'd recommend this lubricant to anyone that I know.
