Hey guys, I'm trying to figure out what I want to try first for anal. I've got a couple toys in my wishlists, but curious about any others too!

I like Bootie as a starter.

I've not gotten it yet but I want to get the Beginner Anal Kit. It's the only beginner anal kit made out of silicone!

Look for one in a gentle taper and small base made with silicone.
Bootie is great, so is Ryder. Severin small might work as well, and the base would be more comfy than the Ace.

We tried starting with toys, and we found I prefered fingers and then him, in the beginning. Once we got into anal toys, I found the Plug of Lust Small to be really nice, but I outgrew it as I learned to relax more. It was a nice learning toy.
Now, I use the Luv Pacifier Small and really like it.

I haven't found a plug that's worked for me yet, my next step is going to be to try steel/glass because I've heard that can be good when every other type of plug has failed.

If you prefer a finger shaped toy, instead of a tear drop shaped toy, the [|Crystal Cote Plug is really nice for beginners and everybody. It stays in well during PIV intercourse.
We use this toy, the Marble G as an anal probe. It may not be quite what you want at the beginning, but it has a nice, long handle on it, and although it doesn't have a flange, it meets Tristan Taoramino's requirements to be at least 8 inches long, so you or your partner can keep a full fist on on the handle. It is really maneuverable, and with some lube is so much fun.
We don't turn the Marble G on though. It's loud and I don't care for vibrations in an anal toy. But, a lot of people do. Oddly, when I wrote the review for this toy, we were only using it on occasion. Now, we have found, that when being very careful, it makes a great anal toy (although you and your partner need to know the limitations and to only carefully insert the bulb only or use it as a "rimming" toy, and keep a careful hand on the handle of this toy.) It is being used now more than any time in the past 4 years of owning it. The company makes an anal toy with the exact parameters of the Marble G, but in black for anal use. If used properly, it's a safe anal toy. The nice thing about probes is that they are easier to control by a partner or by you than a plug which just sits there.
Take your time and figure out what you want.

Take your time and try different toys. My Man and I use a lot of anal toys and have had all of them "work." However, we don't even have any glass or steel for anal play.

Everybody is a little different, but I prefer a softer, most pliable toy for most anal play. I don't know if glass or steel work "when other toys don't" as they are very firm and hard and have a learning curve to using them anally.
What problems have you had with anal toys "not working?" Often, using a lot of good thick lube and having an orgasm before you attempt any anal penetration, as well as relaxing as much as possible (which a couple of orgasms will do) makes the difference.
Good luck in your quest! I hope you and Rahel find the right toy for you both.
I didn't like my first anal toy at first (the Crystal Cote] but after playing with anal play for a while, I found I liked it a lot. Many people enjoy rimming and gentle lubed fingers before they move on to toys. Other people like to warm up with toys. Try both ways and see what works.
Don't forget that orgasm first. I found it made all the difference.

I agree, this looks like a nice variety for beginners. I want to upgrade my horrible DJ anal kit to this one eventually.

Ace plug looks nice, you can't go wrong with Tantus.

A lot of good suggestions. Have to consider quite a few of these myself.

Ace Plug Small, it's got a great flared base.

I'd go with Ace, but I sort of have a bias towards Tantus toys.

Can't go wrong with any Tantus toy, go for the Ace!

I'd assume that the ace plug is a better choice!

The Ace seems nice.

I started off with the Pleasure no. 1 from Happy Valley. The Tristan plugs look good too.
