How prevalent and bad is the female equivalent of "blue balls"?

Contributor: Vaccinium Vaccinium
For those of you who aren't familiar with this distressing sensation, here is Wikipeidia's explanation:

Blue balls is the slang term for a congested prostate or vasocongestion, the condition of temporary fluid congestion in the testicles and prostate region caused by prolonged sexual arousal in the human male often accompanied by acute testicular pain or testicular congestion due to prolonged and unsatisfied sexual excitement. The term is thought to have originated in the United States, first appearing in 1916.

Some urologiosts call the condition "epididymal hypertension".

The same Wikipedia article states, and I did not know this, that "Women can also experience discomfort due to a pelvic "heaviness" and aching if they do not reach orgasm.", so I was wondering how prevalent it was in women.

For men, blue balls can range anywhere from achy to downright painful (to the point where it hurts to walk). What is it like for women?

Great post and research. I have never heard of such a thing! I thought many women seldom reached orgasm and that was the supposed to have caused depression, hence, toys came along. I have never heard of a physical effect.

This happens to me if I do not have an orgasm sometimes. The ache can be unbearable.

There is another Blue-Walls post here on EF regarding this same thing.

We did a thread about this sometime ago - we decided to call it 'blue walls'.

EDIT: Redboxbaby, you thought of it the same time I did.

Oh yeah! It feels like a mild menstrual cramp to me, especially aching down the walls of my vagina.

It's painful for me but it's not incapacitating. It'll put me in a grumpy mood for a while (as if the lack of orgasm hadn't done that already!).

In women, I guess you could call it "persistent genital arousal disorder' for the most severe cases. Apparently it's very uncomfortable.

I haven't experienced any type of physical pain from it, but it DEFINITELY spoils my day. I'll get very grumpy and sad, and just generally very unpleasant. It's not good, I can tell you that.
