An Awkward First Kiss

The Butterfly Kiss is probably not the ideal first toy for a virgin, which I had found out the hard way. The shaping of one's vulva and vagina plays a larger factor than it should in determining whether or not this toy can carry out its intended purpose. Also, if you plan to use the second or third vibration levels, be prepared to hear (and have others hear) the buzz loud and clear.

extremely useful review
This was the first penetrative toy I ever purchased, and as a virgin, I should have done more research into what having a toy designed for the G-spot would entail.

Fresh out of the package, the first thing that might strike a buyer would be the smell. The light, almost strawberry-like scent on the TPR material is noticeable, so those with a keen sense of smell or for those who simply do not like scents that linger on the toy, this would not be the best choice (although it has become a personal turn-on for me). Nor does the smell go away after several washings with soap and warm water, so potential buyers should keep this in mind as well. The trade-off, though, is that TPR is a fairly durable material that is latex free, phthalate free, and hypoallergenic.

The quality of the vibrations depends very heavily on the battery power, too heavily in my opinion. When you use fresh batteries (once you put them in the right way, since there is nothing to indicate which side takes + or -, even the lowest setting has considerable power. This surge of power dies down within about ten straight minutes of use, however, and within an even quicker time if you go up in power. Setting the vibration intensity relies on the use of a push button at the bottom of the vibrator. Sadly, there are only three levels of vibration: low, medium, and high, in that order and with with nothing in between. This being said, if you want to go from medium back to low, you have to use video-gaming finger speeds to push the button to high, then to the off position, and then once more to low.

In order to use this toy comfortably, water-based lube is essential, especially if you are a virgin. It can take a while for a vagina to accommodate the bulbous head (which measures about 4 inches in circumference), although turning on the vibrations beforehand does help considerably. However, the main problem is that, beyond the low setting, the vibrations are considerably audible outside of the body, and putting it against the body does not serve to muffle the sound too well since the motor is located near the base of the toy, which does not go into the body. On the same token, the insertable length of 3.25 inches leaves something to be desired for those who need deeper vaginal stimulation.

The product's distinguishing feature, the butterfly, only does so much. If you want to get to use the butterfly on your clitoris, you pretty much have to insert the vibrator head into your vagina in order to do so. It is almost impossible to use the butterfly alone since the shaft and head cannot bend all the way back, and trying to stimulate the clitoris with just the vibrator head is ineffective since most of the vibrations do not make it up the shaft. Once the butterfly is on the clitoris, it then becomes a matter of whether or not it can actually reach your clitoris. The butterfly is 1.25 inches long from its end to its antennae, and only 1 inch wide from wingtip to wingtip, with less than 1/8" between it and the shaft. I found that the little antennae barely reached my own clit, and the wings only hugged a little to my labia minora (those who have more than 2.25 inches of space between the clitoris and the most posterior part of the vaginal opening might encounter the same problem). The shape of the butterfly also makes it a bit difficult to clean, since the small spaces on its body and wings can collect gunk, although the rest of the toy cleans quite well.

Overall, the Butterfly Kiss is not a toy that I use on a regular basis, nor would it be the first toy on my list of recommendations. I do not regret having bought it for less than $20, though, and I might appreciate it more if I were the type of person who enjoyed penetration with her clitoral stimulation.
Follow-up commentary
After two years of owning this toy, I decided to finally retire it. I simply cannot get over the fact that it does not truly stimulate my clitoris, nor are the vibrations worth being heard from outside a closed door. The TPR material is difficult to clean, and the decision to retire this butterfly came when I found gunk and dried up soap in crevices of the wings. I have some good memories from when I first started using it back in November 2010 but the magic now is gone.
