About author

After reading Dr. Sadie Allison's "Tickle His Pickle", I was intrigued to see what else she had to say and decided to pick up "Ride 'Em Cowgirl". Dr. Sadie is a Licensed Doctor of Human Sexuality and a member of the American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors & Therapists (AASECT). She presents her wealth of knowledge in a personable, fun, easy to understand manner that never makes the reader feel like they are in class being berated with complicated scientific terms.

Content / Style / Audience

"Ride 'Em Cowgirl" is an easy to read illustrated guide for both men and women looking to spice it up between the sheets. The book is aimed primarily at women, of course, but the author infuses the book with cute tips for "cowgirls" and "cowboys", with certain sections saved for just men. Dr. Allison writes with an obvious passion for what she does, and with a happy attitude. The book features tons of variety in sexual positions and also includes tips for finding the elusive P and G spots, tips for pregnant sex, tweaking sex positions for voluptuous couples, and tips for adding sex toys and equipment to your repertoire.

Illustrations by Steve Lee are found on almost every page and add a fun graphic novel feel to the book. The couple depicted are hetero, but the advice included in the book can be used in any coupling.

A run-down of the chapters are as follows:
Chapter 1: Your Passion Cocktail - The author gives a crasher course on hygiene and igniting passion, as well as "sex etiquette" tips that are pretty much common sense. Wear perfume, clean your fingernails, take a shower, don't stink, etc.

Chapter 2: Supergasms - This chapter gives the reader an overview of the possible orgasms that men and women can achieve. P-spot and G-spot orgasms are briefly mentioned, as well as a Kegel workout that you are invited to try out in the middle of a bookstore (if that's where you happen to first glance at this book).

Chapter 3: The Art of Penetration - Lube and dirty talk are prescribed, as is the importance of foreplay and taking one's time.

Chapter 4: The Art of Being Penetrated - Prrrretty much the same info as the previous chapter, though geared for women specifically.

Chapter 5: Missionary Possible - Here's where the fun begins! Dr. Allison prescribes several non-boring takes on the classic missionary position with plenty of detailed illustrations.

Chapter 6: Doggystyle - More positions utilizing doggy style, using some helpers like chairs, couches and lots of pillows.

Chapter 7: Ride 'Em Cowgirl - It gets pretty self-explanatory at this point. This is the title chapter and features girl-on-top positions.

Chapter 8: Spooning - Positions for side by side sex, and one that features a perpendicular pairing that is super fun.

Chapter 9: Clitilicious - Positions that feature the clitoris as the star of the show.

Chapter 10: The G Spot - Gives detailed directions for finding the G spot and explains the art of female ejaculation.

Chapter 11: Backdoor Boogaloo - Great tips for first timers and those who are mildly curious about anal sex but haven't found a way into it yet. Seasoned vets may still find fun in the positions featured in this chapter.

Chapter 12: The HE Spot - How to find your man's P-spot, and how to make it a comfortable and safe experience.

Chapter 13: Voluptuous Lovin' - Positions made for plus-sized couples, or ways to tweak positions you already love.

Chapter 14: Pregnant Poses - Tips for preggers babes and when NOT to engage in sex when you're expecting.

Chapter 15: Outercourse:Good Messy Fun - A chapter on the art of dry-humping and manual sex.

Chapter 16: Location, Location, Location - Tips on how to score sex in a public place, and suggestions for where to begin (also how not to get caught).

Chapter 17: Vive La Difference - This was my favorite bit because the author covers all possible penis shapes and how to make the best of each. Also features tips on handling an uncut guy, and how fun they can be.

Chapter 18: Sexy Playthings - Sex toys! Specifically, swings, ties, anal plugs and P-spotters.

The Appendix features a lengthy chapter on the benefits of safe sex, though it confuses me as to why this is at the END rather than the beginning. I'd think safe sex would be a thing to FIRST read about before getting nekkid and sweaty, but maybe that's just me.

Design

The cover of the book features the obligatory red lipsticked chick in a cowboy hat, so it isn't all that discreet. It's quite a small paperback book that can easily be kept in a nightstand drawer and pulled out quickly when you want to learn a new position.

Experience

This is a fun book to have around, but the positions aren't too out of the ordinary, and kinkier couples may be bored with the content. Overall, Dr. Sadie Allison gives a fun rundown of sex positions, what to do to achieve certain kinds of orgasms for men and women, and illustrations and directions for how to spice things up. This isn't a go-to book for my man and me, but it was fun flipping through and marking what to try next. I'm not disappointed with the book by any means, but after reading so many other sex "guides", it just seems the typical run of the mill book. This is why I am giving it 3 stars out of 5.

    great review!
it is hard to get through sex guides after a while, there's so much repeated information and usually very little that makes each book stand out.
