A Very Scary Book

This book is a big disappointment. I did not find any useful tips, although it was good entertainment for an afternoon. However, it is upsetting to read, and I don't recommend it for anyone.
Published:
Pros

Cons
Propagates harmful stereotypes against women, men, Asians, and probably numbers of others.

extremely useful review
Sex Secrets of an American Geisha caught my eye when wandering through this site. It looked like a fun and flirty book giving tips on how to be more seductive and ways to capture people who you have always been interested in. Well I suppose that was the aim of the book, but in my eyes it fails miserably.

Not only did this book not give me tips I found useful in becoming more seductive, it is in my mind totally counterproductive to any sort of positive sex. Every page of this book propagates anti-feminine stereotypes. It suggests that we should learn to be extra "feminine" and live only to take care of our “good man”. It enforces stereotypes of women similar to those of a 1950s housewife. Although, this housewife doesn’t cook because she is busy perfecting her sex secrets–and food will only make you fat.

In addition, it seems to promote Asian fetishes noting that the reason some men seemed obsessed with Asian women is because Asian women have learned how to be feminine and if we all learn this, men will be crazy about us in the same way. Are you serious? Also, this book is extremely classist, recommending women to get easier, less well-paying jobs in order to be more beautiful, as if this is something we can all afford to do. Not to mention the fact that women have worked so hard for the privilege of well-paying jobs.

The author recognizes that this book will be hard for some feminists to accept, but claims that if you follow what she says–no matter how outrageous, things will turn out well for you. I would like to note that I am glad this author is in a happy relationship, but I really hope no person takes this book seriously.

Suggestions on how to become more seductive range from losing weight and making yourself more conventionally beautiful (even if you need surgery) to constructing a shrine to your good man’s cock. Yes, an actual shrine.

Honestly, I’d rather be single for life than ever become the kind of women this author wants to me to be. Now I don’t know what to do with this book, normally I would give it to a friend, but I don’t want anyone to have to read this! It would be good as entertainment if I didn’t think there were some people who will be willing to believe they really do just need to make themselves “beautiful” and become a sex slave to a man in order to have a happy life. Perhaps I should donate it to the Women's and Gender department|Gender 101.

All in all, this book is harmful to the positive sex community and a complete waste of money.

That's horrible. I hope they consider removing this from the site. Even just from looking at the cover, it looks to feed into a number of bad stereotypes.

Sexism, racism, classism -- doesn't get any better than that! Frightening.

As a geisha-obsessor, the title alone aggravates me! I'm sorry the book wasn't any good. =(

I had been eyeing this book off and on because of my love for Geisha culture. But I do not like the implication that Geisha are sexual creatures whose only purpose is to please a man. Geisha were/are much more talented than that.

It does look like it would reinforce horrible stereotypes against Asian women. Thank you for this review. I will stay far away from this book.
