K, Y did I buy this again?
KY is popular, but only because it's very cheap and easy to find. There are better lubes out there, even at your local Walmart.

Remember how when you were younger you would consult your best friend for sex advice, regardless of whether either of you had ever had sex or not? Your best friend was a familiar presence, and even if the advice or sex trivia were utterly bogus, you still trusted him or her because he or she didn't freak you out.
A similar thing happened to me when I bought my first lube. I was fourteen and suffering from severe vaginal dryness due to my birth control pills. I was so dry that I couldn't even get tampons in without it hurting during my heaviest flow days. I bought my first tube of KY, originally, for this purpose. I think I only bought the KY because 1) it was the cheapest lube I could find, and 2) it was either that or the slightly more expensive Astroglide at my local Walmart. I had only heard of KY at that point, so yeah. I didn't even know other brands of lubricant existed until I was almost 18. Gotta love childish ignorance...
When the lube is fresh out of the tube, it's a nice gel consistency, as "jelly" implies. It coats smoothly, making it easy to slide stuff like tampons up. It's also extremely slippery when fresh (see "experience" section below for an example). Unfortunately, it also dries very quickly. The original nice gel consistency becomes goopy and sticky to the touch just minutes after it leaves the tube. This also makes thrusting extremely uncomfortable as it dries faster with each thrust because of air exposure.
KY can also cause yeast infections if you are sensitive, like me. Glycerin has been linked to yeast infections, as have parabens. KY has both. I think I now know why I've been having all those yeast infections after my period and masturbation periods post-using KY.
I finally managed to convince my mom to stop buying me KY a couple of months ago, and I couldn't be happier. Ditch the KY and go find some better lubes elsewhere (e.g. EF). Even if it's $10, if it's good lube it's better than the $4 you'll spend on a tube of KY.

Experience
When it's fresh out of the tube, the lube is extremely slippery if the thing you're inserting is smooth-textured as well. I once inserted my basic vibrator after coating it with KY only for it to literally shoot out of my vagina when I let go for even a second to wipe the excess off my hand with a tissue. I expect some slide-out (especially if my vaginal muscles aren't squeezing tight enough), but the damn vibe shot straight out like a toy rocket a few inches away from me. This also happened to me a few other times while inserting Tampax Pearl tampons.
Follow-up commentary
6 months after original review
I never want to use KY ever again. No KY has yet to get even close to me since I switched to other lubes. You can find better lubes on EF; avoid this.
