Lubricant discontinued
by K-Y Brand

The classic, the original - it needs no introduction.

K-Y Jelly is a good standby, with a low cost and good performance. With its wide availability and purchase price, this is an excellent option for most circumstances, whether at home, traveling or even in remote locations. My only reservations are the chemical content and the fact that it isn't made with natural ingredients.

Use

The best uses for this product are intercourse and wrestling. It works well, and doesn't dry too fast. I have used it with my partner in the shower, on the bed, while camping, and in any number of other situations. It doesn't have any extra bells or whistles; it just does what it is supposed to, doesn't get too sticky and is water-based, so a small amount of water can be used to make it slippery again.

Best used with a partner, but definitely can be used by yourself.

Texture / Consistency / Thickness / Viscosity

K-Y jelly is fairly thick; not as thick as jell-o or even most hair gel, but thick nonetheless. It comes in a handy squeeze tube, so the viscosity isn't an issue. It is easy to pour, but it can also slip off of a hand if you aren't careful. Applying directly to a condom is fine, but beware the lubricant's lively nature, as it may slip off and onto the floor. It does not feel sticky or greasy until it dries out.

Taste / Aroma

I have tasted K-Y on several occasions. It has a slightly sweet taste due to the glycerin base. It has very little or no odor. It isn't something you should eat, but it isn't toxic if you get some on your tongue or mouth. There really isn't much to say in this area; it is a very neutral product.

Performance

It works very well. I have used this product in a variety of climates and areas, and it always performs well. I have no allergy concerns with it, but there is also a sensitive skin version for those who require something milder. It cleans up well, doesn't dry too fast and rarely gets sticky. It does not absorb into the skin very much.

While camping in the high desert, I did notice that this product would dry out after 25-30 minutes. A small amount of water splashed around re-hydrated it but also washed some of the product off. It does get sticky when it dries. The lubricant can come off with just water, but feel free to use soap.

My favorite feature about this product: the cost to performance ratio, or 'bang for the buck', pardon the pun. It costs somewhere under $3.00 USD, can be found nearly anywhere (even in hunting lodges in the middle of nowhere) and holds no surprises.

Packaging

The product is packaged in a handy squeeze tube. If you have read my opinion on the K-Y Yours and Mine set, the biggest flaw was the packaging; not so in the traditional package. Plain plastic squeeze tube which is also recyclable. The only flaw in the squeeze tube is that, if left in the shower, it can sump water in through the crack between the cap and tube. This has the adverse affect of making the entire thing as runny as water and useless. It can be opened and applied with one hand, and no users instructions are required. A small amount can also be put into a travel bottle for air travel.

Personal comments

I approve of it, but I am looking for something to use that is more natural than an amalgamation of purified water, glycerin, hydroxyethylcellulose, chlorhexidine gluconate and some other things. While K-Y works exceptionally well, there are probably other products on the market that blow it out of the water; but it is toy safe for most toys, slick and inexpensive.

Experience

Without sharing too many crass details, I and my wife have used this product in many different locations; it is cheap and easy to find. I recommend it, but with some reservations. In the same manner that I prefer organic vegetables and free-range chicken, I prefer to use natural products on my body. When I find a natural lube that I prefer to K-Y jelly, I will certainly be switching to that.
