Transcends Mediocrity but Falls Short of Greatness

The Couture Transcend Flexing Massager is a compact alternative to the Hitachi since it is smaller, uses batteries, and is weaker but still powerful. For people who like the idea of the Hitachi but want something that is easier to manage and has more variety, this massager is a good choice. It's not the best vibrator but it's definitely above-average, even if it doesn't work very well for massages. Being water-proof and having a silicone cap, alone, will likely make the purchase well worth it.

Use

The Couture Transcend Flexing Massager is first-and-foremast a vibrating massager. The strong, deep vibrations and flexible neck can do wonders on the kinks in your neck, back, and other parts of your body. This pastel purple wonder isn't just good for massages, however (and actually, the patterns aren't really suitable for it, anyway). It's also great for clitoral stimulation and intense, albeit slow, orgasms. Whether using it for its "intended" purpose or for the naughtier parts of your body, you're at least guaranteed not to get bored with so many functions.

The massager can be used for solo play or with a partner. In my opinion, it is better used as a couple's toy because the buttons are hard to differentiate without seeing and due to its small size, if you want a proper massage, someone is likely going to have to do it for you. It is completely water-proof and seems to do a good job of it, too, so long as you make sure the battery compartment is sealed on tightly and correctly. With this in mind, feel free to use your massager on a bed or in the shower because it's suitable for either.

Material / Texture

The Couture Transcend Flexing Massager is made in China. I've read some reviews of this product that say it is made entirely of silicone. Those reviews are false on that part. If you read the box, it clearly states that only the head and the flexible neck are made of silicone. The decor ring is made of ABS plastic with silver plating and the rest of the massager is made of ABS plastic with PU Cote. Silicone has a material safety rating of 10, plastic has a rating of 8, and PU-coated plastic has a rating of 7. Being that it is made of silicone and plastic, it is hypoallergenic, latex-free, non-porous, and phthalate-free. There is no discernible smell or taste to this toy.

Overall, the texture of this massager is very smooth. The tip of it is smooth and the handle is, as well. The flexible neck obviously isn't, nor are the ridges on the head. However, as stated, the cap is removable (though I have difficulty doing so) and you could flip it inside out and use the other side, which is completely smooth, if the ridges bother you. I haven't noticed them at all and you might not, either, but the smoother side does help aid in cleaning, as well. Like most massagers, this toy isn't really there for the texture so if you're looking for something more pronounced, you'll have to look elsewhere.

Design / Shape / Size

I like the design of the Couture Transcend Flexing Massager. It's simple and small compared to most other massagers. It's fairly straight and doesn't have the weird shape that you might find with some other massagers, as well. The toy I received is sort of a lavender color with VERY light lavender accents, almost a light pink color. The cap on the head is removable and underneath is more of the light lavender plastic. There are two lines on the battery compartment that you must line up to insure that your toy is fully-sealed and water-proof. This toy fit nicely into my very small hands and it seems like it would be good for larger hands, too. The flexible neck bends easily but there is still some pressure to it so you can feel free to bend it to your desire and still feel the vibrations well. This toy would be suitable for both beginners and advanced users as it has different speeds and patterns and the controls are easy to use. You could hide this toy easily because it's so small and it likely won't give you trouble when you're traveling because it hardly even looks like a sex toy and it doesn't take up much space.

The massager weighs .04 lb, according to the product page. I assume this is without batteries because it is very light without them but quite a bit heftier with them inside. The full length of the toy is about 7 1/4". The head has a width of about 1 3/4" and a circumference of 4 1/8". The neck has a width of about 1 1/2" and a circumference of about 5 1/4". The handle has a length of about 4 1/4". At its widest point, it has a width of about 2" inches and a circumference of about 6". At its thinnest point, it has a width of about 1 1/2" and a circumference of about 5 1/4".

Functions / Performance / Controls

This is the section where you will start to hate me because the Couture Transcend Flexing Massager is both easy-to-use and extremely hard-to-understand. It has five different speeds and ten different functions (which I'll elaborate on later). The patterns are complicated, drawn-out, and seem randomly placed so bear with me when I begin to explain them. As for noise, this massager makes nearly no sound on the lowest setting and is quite a bit louder on the highest setting but not so much that it should be heard on the other side of a door. It's not suitable if you share a bedroom with someone whom you wouldn't want to hear because it's audible even under blankets but on a campus, with a roommate, etc., it should be fine. On the lowest setting, there is barely a vibration but each speed is significantly more powerful than the last and it is unbearable on the last setting (for me, because I'm sensitive, but it wouldn't be for power-queens). I do not have another wand massager but I presume that this one is not as strong as, say, the Hitachi but it's definitely more powerful than your traditional vibrator. The vibrations are deep and rumbly but they also feel a little buzzy at times. The vibrations are located in the head of the massager but you can still feel them a little bit in the handle, which might make your hand feel itchy after a while.

The controls on this massager are really simple. There are four buttons on the control panel on the bottom. There is a power button (|), a Function button (F), a plus button (+), and a minus button (-). These are arranged in a cross pattern so that the plus (+) is on top, the minus (-) is on bottom, the power button (|) is on the left, and the Function button (F) is on the right. The power button (|), obviously, turns the toy on and off. The Function button (F) changes the vibration pattern. The plus (+) button increases the speed/intensity. The minus (-) button decreases the speed/intensity. The letters are raised but it's hard to differentiate between them using just touch unless you're adept at that kind of thing. When the massager is turned on, it has a blue LED light that rings around the control panel and makes it easier for you to see the buttons in the dark.

There are ten (10) different vibration patterns to this toy, most of which you can control the speed (intensity) of. There are a few patterns where the speed/intensity changes on its own, so you can't control it during these (namely, escalation/rollercoaster patterns).

1.) Pulsing - Medium Speed
2.) Pulsing - Slow Speed
3.) Pulsing - Medium Speed (Short Length) with End Steady Vibration (Medium Length)
4.) Pulsing - Slow Speed (Short Length) with End Steady Vibration (Long Length)
5.) Pulsing - Fast Speed (Long Length) with End Steady Vibration (Long Length)
6.) Pulsing - Slow Speed (Long Length) with End Steady Vibration (Long Length)
7.) Rollercoaster - Medium Length
8.) Rollercoaster - Long Length
9.) Rollercoaster - Short Length with End Pulsing (Fast Speed and Medium Length)
10.) Rollercoaster - Long Length with End Pulsing (Slow Speed and Long Length)

There are no actual "escalation" patterns as the box states but rather "rollercoaster" patterns. The difference is that escalation patterns go from high to low (or low to high) and then at the end of this pattern, they start over. Rollercoaster patterns go from high to low (or low to high) and then back again, i.e. once it reaches the high point, it goes back down the scale to the low point instead of starting over again immediately at the low point. These are easily mixed-up so I thought it was important to point out the difference.

Care and Maintenance

Silicone is a high-quality, food-grade material that is anti-bacterial in nature. Silicone can normally be sterilized by boiling, but most of this toy cannot because it is motorized so do NOT boil this toy. You can, however, wipe it down with a 10% bleach solution or isopropyl alcohol for the plastic parts. The silicone cap IS removable and you can boil it separately just fine. Once sterilized, this toy should be fairly safe for sharing, so long as you're comfortable with the possibility of bodily fluids mixing. Alternatively, you can simply wash the toy with soap and water but it will not sterilize it like other methods will. It's fairly easy to clean and the only parts that might give you any trouble are the flexible neck and the grooves on the head but some good scrubbing (or boiling for the cap) should take care of that with little problem.

The only lube that's compatible with the massager, as with other silicone toys, is water-based. Oil-based and silicone-based lubricants will degrade your toy, so make sure to keep them away from your toy. That being said, some silicone-based lubricants may be compatible with your toy but you'll have to use them at your own risk and spot-test them to make sure. You also have to watch out for your massager touching other toys. If it touches other toys for a while, depending on the material (including other silicone toys), they may both "melt" and you don't want that to happen. It is best to keep your massager in the box it came in or a plastic bag or similar method to keep it isolated. Since only the cap and the neck are made of silicone, you may not have as much trouble with it as other silicone toys but still, it's better to be safe than sorry. Other than that, this toy is incredibly easy to store due to its small size and simple, straight shape. As for batteries, the massager takes four AA-batteries which seems like a lot but you have to remember that this is a powerful toy.

Packaging

The packaging for the Couture Transcend Flexing Massager is very simple. It comes in a semi-transparent, rectangular plastic box that has a white "snow" effect all over it except on the front where it is clear, allowing you to see the massager inside. The front of the box displays "Couture Collection", "transcend Flexing Massager", "Elegantly Understated Premium Massager", and "Intensely Powerful with 10 Functions and 5 Speeds". It also has a picture of the head of the massager, showing how it flexes, and the California Exotic Novelties company logo, as well as an image proclaiming that the toy is water-proof. The sides of the box are relatively the same, both having the name and the company logo once more but one side has a bar code on it and the other states that it's a "Massager" in multiple languages and has an image telling you not to simply throw it away. The back of the box has the name, another water-proof image, a "Safe and Pure" image (with some text below it that is too small to read), and some information about the toy, as well as another image of the toy, showing its flexing head and the control panel. The text is as follows: "*Flexible, Floating Head for Total Dexterity, *Thoroughly Waterproof for Fun In and Out of the Water", *Premium Silicone Head & Neck, *Intense Incremental 5-Speed Control, *Luminous LED Ring, *Power Button for One Touch On/Off, and *10 Functions of Vibration, Pulsation, & Escalation". There is also a rectangle of text at the bottom that states: "Elegance, innovation and passion inspired the Couture Collection. Premium Silicone is used to craft this flexing, personal massager. Utilize the 10 intense functions of vibration, pulsation and escalation plus the 5 speeds of vibrating power. "Couture" is simply the best! Production registration: www.vibetronics.com" The top of the box just has the logo on it. The bottom of the box has this information on it: "Copyright 2011 by California Exotic Novelties, LLC, Chino, CA. Made in China. Uses 4 AA size batteries, not included. SOLD AS A NOVELTY ONLY. Material: ABS with PU Cote (massager), ABS with Silver Plating (decor ring), Silicone (head, neck), www.calexotics.com All rights reserved. The shape and appearance of this packaging is a trademark and trade dress of California Exotic Novelties, LLC. TWIST CAP SECURELY BEFORE USE. Wash before and after each use. Remove batteries when not in use. Always use a water based lubricant with this product for maximum pleasure. This product is intended for use as a novelty product only. For external use only. Any product use for medical purposes or for a use that has an adverse effect on any function of the body is prohibited."

No instructions came with this massager but it's incredibly easy to use so they weren't really necessary. The only thing inside the box was a plastic mold which held the toy. The box is a little higher than the toy and it's about as wide as two of the massagers so it's a little big to store it in but would work, nonetheless. The box is relatively discreet because except for the part on the bottom about using lube for "maximum pleasure", much of the box's text could be explained away as information about a non-sexual massager, which this toy can very well serve as. It DOES show the toy inside but the toy isn't very sexual-looking in nature, either. The box would be good to use to give this toy as a gift because it's fairly discreet and all of the pertinent information about the toy is on the box (and the rest is easy to figure out).

Personal comments

I only have a few additional comments about the Couture Transcend Flexing Massager. Firstly, I'm sure you've heard of and maybe experienced massagers before and know that they tend to be very powerful. I just wanted to point out that while this massager is quite strong for a vibrator, it is not going to be on par with the electrically-powered massagers like the Hitachi Wand and the Wahl Massager. It is too strong for me on the higher speeds but if you're used to the strength of these kinds of massagers, this one will likely not satisfy you. Finally, when you screw on the battery compartment's cap, it makes a clicking sound from the springs inside that grates in my ears and makes me think I'm breaking my toy. This may not bother a lot of people but for some who are sensitive to bad noises, I'm sure this is useful information.

Experience

My experience with the Couture Transcend Flexing Massager so far has been good but not mind-blowing. It is not the best or worst vibrator I've used but it's slightly better than average. I would say that it's a pretty good sex toy but I'm not sure how I feel about it as a massager. It's a little hard to reach places on your own and there are no patterns that are just steady vibration so it's not the best for working the kinks in your body. In fact, most of the vibration pattens are next to useless for massage purposes but they do wonders when applied to the clitoris. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this massager if you're looking for something that can efficiently be used as a good massager but if you want one that is small, has unique patterns, and is powerful for a battery-operated toy, this massager is for you.
