However, I don't experience the same sort of release with kinky sex as I did with self injuring. With the SI stuff, I would shut down emotionally as well as physically. I couldn't feel pain. With a BDSM experience, I feel the pain, but it translates into awesome pleasure sometimes, and there is no emotional shut down.

I felt the pain when I SI'd - it was the pain that was the release. When done for sexual satisfaction, it's a completely different release than the one I get during BDSM.
However - and this is huge - there are times when I will engage in BDSM not to sexually satisfy myself, but simply to feel pain. It's almost a "socially acceptable" form of self-injury (or, at least one that won't get looked twice at in certain circles).
It really all depends on my mindset and how I go into a scene.
