I am looking for a plug that will stay in during masturbation, one that makes it's presence known, and would be fairly comfortable for about an hour of wear.
I don't yet own a butt plug, so I can't make a recommendation, but when I get one, I'm going to be looking into glass for my first. Also, the Risque looks awesome to me.
I would say that the Ryder looks fun, it is silicone and a safe material and appears as though it would stay put and not be a nuisance. I voted other because my starter plug was the fun factory Bootie and it is perfect for an anal plug beginner in my opinion. It's not too much too fast.
I personally think glass is a wonderful starter material for your first anal toy. Glass is slick by itself, so it slides in extra easy with lube. It's totally safe and hygienic and can be sterilized in any number of ways. Anyway, what I would recommend for a starter anal plug isn't on the list, it's Pleasure Pearls. It's not intimidating size wise, but remember, when using glass it feels larger than it is because it does not have the squish factor. So it looks small, but feels a bit larger when in use. It really stays put also. Happy hunting!

Great point! I'm definitely going to look more closely at glass toys - the Pleasure Pearls look very interesting! How much larger would you say a glass toy feels compared to a silicone toy of the same size? I have used fairly substantial silicone dildos for butt play, which is why I wasn't necessarily looking at the small silicone plugs.
I have the Ryder and Severin but I would say that the severin might be better for a beginner bcs you can stop after the first bulge and slowly work your way to the second bulge if you want to go that far. It is not the best toy to begin with, there are other smaller plugs available that would be great starter toys.
The Ryder was my first butt plug, and I would definitely recommend it for a beginner. It's really comfortable for longer (I've had it in for around 3 hours with no issues) wear.
I didn't pick any from your list, because I only like the stainless steel Njoy Pure Plug. It costs more than the silicone plugs, but its design will continuously stimulate your g-spot area all the while you're wearing it, and it stays in place perfectly.
I haven't used a plug yet either, but those seem fairly substantial. I will probably go with the Bootie.
I've heard great things about the Bootie, but since I've used dildos for butt toys before (decent sized ones), I think it may be a little smaller than I'd like. The shape looks stimulating, though!

I thought the same thing when I was looking at anal plugs. I love the Moonshine for its girth and all.. and for long time wear? I do say the Bootie. And it has become one of my favourite toys for anal. And I am a size queen when it comes to girth.
The Violet Ripple, when I first saw it, I wanted it. And I still want it. However; the flared base gives me worry. It just doesn't look all that safe with such a tiny base.
E started out with the Silicone Crystal Cote butt plug. It's a pretty simple shape, somewhat like a rounded, upside down V. It was good for easing her into anal play. Since then she's used bigger plugs, normal dildos and me ;-)
There is an embarrassment of information here. We just did research through reviews and reading the forums. You'll find something that works for you.
I've used three (none of these though) and for a beginner I would recommend either the lil end, or the Ryder, which is similar, but larger. Unless you only want a plug to become accustomed to the stimulation, which your question suggests is not the case, try one that vibrates. All of the filling sensation of those listed, with the added bonus of vibrations. Also, make sure the base is large enough to prevent suckage. Unless having a toy removed from the colon in a hospital wouldn't embarrass you, making sure it doesn't get sucked up is priority one.
I was originally going to get the Ryder (in Copper because it's such a gorg colour) but ended up with the Joe Rock. I am happy with it. It doesn't have that tacky feeling like the silicone they use in the Ryder has, but more of a smooth-coat. It makes insertion MUCH easier.
It all depends on your previous experiences. I voted the Ryder because of the ones you've listed it's the one that seems to fit most of the criteria. It stays in and it's a nice, solid presence inside you. However, I usually don't recommend it for total beginners because the shape is not really easy to insert if you're not used to things going in instead of just out, because there is not much of a gradual increase in size. It starts big and it only gets bigger (relatively speaking. Here is my review for the Ryder, in case you want more detail).
If you have used dildos anally before, however, this might not be a problem.
the first butt toy ive ever got was the crystal anos and it is 10 inches long! so definitely too big. I would go for a kit. I used the colt anal kit, but I had some butt sex experience. so if you're a total newbie, i would go for slim butt plug junior
I love the Ryder! The Tantus website is even carrying some limited edition neon versions of it! BUT, for a beginner? I don't think any of these are a great way to go because they're fairly large.
I would highly recommend the LELO Bob even though it's geared toward men. Both my male bodied partner and myself love how it looks and feels, it stays in during masturbation amazingly and it's excellent for a beginner.

I probably should have put this in the question, but this isn't the first time using anything anally, which is why I didn't choose any of the smaller toys. I've used silicone dildos anally before, and have had anal sex, so while it is my first butt plug dedicated to booty time, it's not my first foray into anal play

Ryder, definitely! If you go with the one that has the most votes right now (Violet Ripple) you may find that the base isn't very big, plus when you're using lube (which you should for anal play) you may find that the glass slips around in your grasp making removal a tad difficult. I'd personally say none of the above and go for either the Tantus Flirt or Tantus small Ripple. Both are easy to use, affordable, comfortable and not too big for a beginner.

I certainly do NOT recommend anything as big as the Tristan or the Plug of Lust Large, or as oddly shaped as the Ryder, the Cody or the Severin, for your first butt plug. You should start with something very smooth and safe (silicone or glass), and it should have a gradual taper in both directions and be easy to remove should something happen. My first butt plug was clear glass and shaped exactly like the ... a plug they apparently no longer carry here. Lemme seeee.....
That's approximately what it looked like. A narrow cone tapered to a rounded point, an abrupt stop at the neck, and a circular flare at the base. Veeerrry comfy. The closest thing here is the Sexy Spades, I'd say. Anyway play safe and have fun, whatever you choose! ^_^

As a first anal toy, a small one would be best. I'd choose the Love Pacifier Beginner.
Or the Plug of Lust Small. Please remember, when your anus is "trained" and you can take more, the Plug of Lust Small might present a problem, as the flared base is very flexible. But, at least for me, when I started, the Plug of Lust Large was too big for starter anal play. The Small was perfect.
If you like a more finger shaped plug, the Crystal Cote Plug Beginner size is nice.

I'd go for the violet ripple. As Kate says, you might want something more flexible, but since you're new to it, you might not wear it that long anyway, so the glass - which you may find after a time becomes uncomfortable - wouldn't matter much. The only other problem is the flaring at the bottom. It's not all that wide, so you might have some difficult extricating it. Still, even after that, I'd recommend the ripple.

Sorry I missed this! I would say add about 1/4" (approximately) to the diameter of any glass toy.
Ah, I missed that first time around, sorry. If you're not a newb to anal play, then you'll probably want to skip the Pleasure Pearls, it'll be too small for you.
I'm pretty sure I'm going to go with the purple Ryder as my first plug! Thanks for all your suggestions and helpful comments. I think I will also definitely try a glass plug (possibly getting the Moonshine?), and then maybe the Pure Plug, so I'll have a variety of shapes and materials to play with. I am so excited!!
Severin and Ryder both stay in well, but you didn't say how much anal experience you have had. Both of them expand rather quickly, and if you're not used to toys that size I wouldn't recommend them as a first toy. If you've used other toys that are close to their size then go ahead.

I've had anal sex, and I've used silicone dildos in my butt before. I've used the Ophoria Beyond #3, which doesn't seem to be on the site anymore, but has a pretty big head. It did take warming up to get there though. So I have quite a bit of experience, I've just never had a butt plug!

I would recommend that you stay away from glass (and other hard, unforgiving materials) and toys with a diameter above 1.25 inches if it's your very first anal plug that will stay long term and during masturbation, since the hard materials might cause bruises and large plugs may be less comfortable. My favorite toy for these purposes are the Mood Naughty plugs (preferably the Large or the Medium, since the small is *tiny*). They are made of silicone, affordable, have very comfortable bases, have nice flex in the neck, and are still firm enough that you can really feel them. For a bigger toy than the Naughty Large, the Severin Medium and the Ryder look good, but I don't have any personal experience with them.
All of these are too large for a beginner's plug, IMO. I'd go with the small Pure Plug or the Tantus Little Flirt, and then eventually move up to the Ryder.

Of those, the Ryder. It's soft and of a reasonable size and comfortable shape. My first was the Violet Ripple, and it was too large and too firm for me to really love it, but not too big to be able to use at all.
There's a nice beginner anal set in silicone that's perfect as a starter set, if you want other suggestions. Just stay away from large, firm, and weird shapes for the first one. You can always buy something else later, but if you hate your first purchase because it hurts or is hard to use, you might never try a second.
My first was a set of small anal beads. You can pop just one in and it would stay in fine. I fell with a but pug, you have to put it all in or it wont stay.
I love the Ripple but I don't think its best for staying in and it may not be large enough for you. I've heard good things about the Ryder but I haven't tried it yet.
I would make sure to get one with a nice base. I liked having a solid base on my first plug and I think it helped make me a bit more comfortable with the toy.
Highly recommend Fun Factory's Bootie. We used it as his first plug. The taper on it makes insertion quite easy and the silicone texture is very forgiving.
can't go wrong with glass. And you could heat it or cool it -- if it keeps its temperature throughout your playtime, that could be a cool new sensation
