If I am using it by myself, I either want some big balls or a big base. If I'm into the moment and not paying attention.. I like both, just depends on what I'm looking for in the experience. I will say that Goodfella is one of my favorite dildos, and it has balls. I just like how they feel, and then you have a nice base to hold onto as well.
That's my only dildo with balls though, so it's not like I have to have them.
