what kind of supplies do you use during menstruation?

Oh okay. I've looked at many sites but they never really said much about them. I found a few that told you how to make them and it said to just use fleece.

Anyone know a good place to buy some for a good price?

I started off on disposable pads, and then moved to tampons... and then found re-useable cloth pads.

and yes, i am more grossed out by a plastic bag of dried out disposable pads/tampons than ones I can rinse and wash and reuse

I've been a tampons girl for forever, but I just got a menstrual cup and have used it for one cycle. I like it so far!

If you are looking for the cheapest option you can use an old flannel blanket or shirt from a thrift store to make a few pads to try out. Otherwise check out your local sewing and craft stores for fabric remnants and sales. Flat woven dishtowels or diaper cloth would work if you can get them cheap enough.
Any soft absorbent material will work you just need to pick something that seems comfy.

If you want to send me a pm I would be happy to talk about how you might go about making your own pattern for pads.

if you meant pre-made cloth pads try etsy or the gladrags website if you don't have a "natural foods" type store nearby that carries them.

I do both, but I prefer pads to tampons (I only really like tampons if I'm going swimming or something).

Tampax pearl lites, I am a lite bleeder on the pill. I have no issues. I hate pads, since when I wear pads all it does is run to the side. I never feel clean in pads.

I use tampons mainly, and liners for when I'm waiting for things to clear up. I got a Diva cup a few months ago and haven't tried it out yet.

disposable tampons, panty liners, and pads. Depends on the mood. My period is the only thing I'm not very eco friendly about :/

Our daughter has a roommate who uses a cup...something I was not even aware of till recently, She says the bathroom smells terrible when this girl empties it. As our daughter is studying medicine and has spent three years working in hospitals, we trust her when she describes something as "smelling sick". She is far more concerned about this cup and pooled old blood being retained, then she is in a clean tampon or pad.

Seems a number of woman here trust these Diva Cups....but they are sure not for me....and definitly not my daughter now!

I used pads/tampons for about 10 years, and hated my period. I was a stickler for changing tampons ever 4-6 hours, so I'd use pads at night, but they would always leak and I ruined so many undies

I've been using the Lunette Menstrual Cup for little over a year now, and it is the best! I could never imagine going back to pads or tampons. Besides the cramps on the first day, I don't remember that I'm on my period until it is time to empty my cup. It is so comfortable, I never have any leaks, and I don't have to worry about packing the right number of pads/tampons when I go out.

I primarily use a reusable menstrual cup. I Love love love my cup. I do also have numerous washable cloth pads I had sewn myself as sometimes the cup bothers me a bit and I like to let the blood flow. I have horribly heavy periods so not having to buy oodles of tampons and pads every month was very liberating, plus the cup is so much more comfortable. I do still keep three tampons in a small compartment in my purse for emergencies, either for myself or a friend that needs one.

I don't think I could do reusable stuff. I'm a germ freak about that kind of stuff, even if it was clean.

"Free bleeding"? Yikes. I use disposable pads most of the time, and tampons once in a blue moon. I'm looking into the DivaCup and/or cloth pads though

My period only lasts a day or one and a half at most so I just use disposable tampons. I honestly don't even know what a menstrual cup is?

Ooh, I loooove this subject.

I use sea sponges, almost exclusively. I'm a reduce, reuse, and recycle freak, so I gradually made the switch from conventional pads, liners and tampons to the organic, eco-friendly disposables out there. Then I removed my IUD and my period nearly died away. Even the smallest of tampons became uncomfortable because I didn't have enough flow to soften it. Pulling a dry bullet of cotton out of my lady-hoo was painful, so I started looking for alternatives.

I used to have a friend who had worked as a sex worker, and her fellow workers had taught her to wear a sea sponge during her period so that she could work without interruption during her cycle--the sponge absorbs flow temporarily and compresses during penetration, so isn't felt by the penis. I thought it could work for my negligible period, and now I can't imagine using anything else. I have worn a sponge during sex with a man and he said he wasn't able to feel it, and I didn't feel it either.

I leave it in the same amount of time I would a tampon, and I usually take it out in the shower, so I can remove it and rinse it out with no mess. Disinfecting is easy. After rinsing, the sponge is stained and looks like it was in a car accident. I put it in a cup, cover it with hydrogen peroxide, and leave it overnight. In the morning it is pale and pristine again. I rinse it out and let it dry for storage or reuse. I buy them at Whole Foods or EarthFare, and trim them to a comfortable size and a shape that's easy to pull out.

As to the last question: it's not my own waste that bothers me, it's that with disposables, it sits around in the garbage can. I want it gone. With reuseables, the waste is for the most part rinsed away right away, and that just feels cleaner to me.

Thanks for the great topic.

If I don't get another Mirena put in after I have this one removed, I'd definitely think about getting a menstruation cup for when I was sitting at home.

I use a reusable menstrual cup, and I love it! So convenient, and I don't have to remember to restock pads and tampons, though I do keep a few of each of those around still in case friends need them.
