Silk medium - dildo discontinued by Tantus - review by Spilock

The Silk Medium by Tantus is a dildo that's intended to be used by anyone looking for a phallic sexual implement that has no actual resemblance to a real penis. The non-realistic (yet gorgeous) colors, the lack of any sort of head, and the smooth shape make this line of toys almost perfect for either those who can't stand anything penis-shaped, but still want to get that phallic sense of fullness and pleasure. Due to the unintimidating size and texture along with the flared base, this toy is also clearly designed with anal adventures in mind as well. It's also one of the more flexible dildos out there, allowing for it to easily shift and bend into any orifice you place it in.

In addition, this dildo also works very well in a strap-on and as an introduction to pegging. You may have seen it in the Bend Over Beginner or Bend Over Beginner Intermediate harness kits, where you can get it, another dildo, and a harness as a combo. If you're interested in trying a strap-on either anally or vaginally, I would recommend picking up the latter of those two kits and starting out with this dildo until you're ready to move up to the larger size.

Like any good Tantus product, the Silk Medium is made out of pure medical grade silicone, and this particular dildo is one of the softer blends they make. It has a fantastic swirling pattern which is unique in each finished product, and it's easy for one to be mesmerized while looking at the patterns. The base is wide and smooth, which gives it a light suction property, if you're ever interested in trying it hands free. That said, it's probably not a strong enough seal to withstand vigorous thrusting as it popped off with me several times.

The complete lack of a texture along with the soft silicone make the Silk Medium very forgiving for just about any sort of sexual activity. However, the smooth texture can be a bit of problem in anal as it can easily allow your sphincters to act like a squeegee and remove any lube from the surface of it. This will probably mean that you need to reapply lube more often than with other toys, but not horribly so.

Another property of Tantus' blend of silicone is that it has virtually no taste or smell, which is a good thing. However, it's very eager to absorb the smell of anything it comes in contact with. If you're using it anally, it will not smell pleasant afterwards unless you leave it in its own little corner of the room to air out. It also happens to absorb the smell of other odorous toys if it's kept nearby them, as my Silk Medium currently smells like the variety of Doc Johnson PVC dildos it's been resting near, and with that in mind I've elected to store it alone in its own zip lock bag in the future.

The design of the Silk line of dildos is really one that you either love or hate, depending almost entirely on whether or not you like your toys realistic or textured. If you can strongly answer yes to either of those options, then you should probably drop my review score for the Silk Medium by at least a full star, maybe two. It's a great design that's smooth, bends easily, and makes for a great warm-up if you're wanting to move onto something larger later. However, it may cause you to squeegee off all of the lube mid-use, may not cause enough stimulation, and it may be too gentle of a warm-up to really help you move onto the next toy for the night. This is really a personal call that depends on your own tastes, so I'll leave you to make the judgement call for yourself on if you'll like the design.

One definite positive of the shape and size, however, is that it's very much so beginner friendly. If you're looking to get into anal, few dildos are a better introduction than this one. The smaller than average girth won't cause much pain, even if you're an over-achieving absolute beginner. The smooth texture will also allow it to slide right in without the usual 'pop' that you find in any sort of dildo with a head. The length is also just long enough to allow it to hit both p-spots and g-spots with every thrust without poking you uncomfortably. The flared base also make it safe for anal and strap-on usage, which is always a plus.

Overall, I'm satisfied with the design and size. If you're a beginner it will be a great fit; if you're not you should probably avoid it.

This is where I'm a little mixed in terms of my opinion on the Silk Medium. It's a great introductory dildo for anal endeavors, but that's probably about it. Unless you're looking for a relatively petite toy to stimulate your g-spot alongside a vibrator, this is probably a pass if you're looking at it for vaginal penetration. If you want to try out anal and want to purchase a toy that's easy to take and easy on the wallet, then this is a great way to see if you like this kind of play. If you're more experienced with anal or want to pick up something that you'll use for a long time, I would probably avoid it, as it simply doesn't have the girth or texture to be a lasting toy in your collection. The super smooth texture's squeegee property is also surely to grate on your nerves if you're more experienced.

All that said, I would by lying if I said that this toy didn't have it's merits in performance. Even with some of the additional lube necessary, it was a great introduction to pegging when I first got it. It's also a great introduction to prostate play, as it's just long enough to stimulate the prostate and definitely intensified my orgasms during masturbation.

As is standard with Tantus toys, the Silk Medium is made of silicone and is extremely easy to care for. A warm wash with antibacterial soap is pretty much all that's needed, but you can sterilize it with a 10% bleach solution, by boiling it, or by washing it on the top rack of a dish washer with no soap. That said, it's particularly apt at retaining smells until they've naturally dissipated, so keep that in mind if you find yourself obsessing over whether or not it's clean. It's also not safe to use it with silicone based lubes, so I would suggest sticking to water based ones for your escapades with it. Finally, if you intend to share it with a partner, the sanitizing methods mentioned a moment ago will usually suffice for that, as condoms are a bit loose on this dildo.

Though I've rated the Silk Medium 3 stars out of 5, I think it really depends on what you want out of it. I thoroughly enjoyed it and it was a great introductory dildo. That said, after moving on to some other dildos with more texture and a larger size, it's been months since I've pulled this one out of the toy box. It is easy to sanitize though, and it still works well as a warm-up prior to using my other toys. It's a great ride and a fun time, but one that may not occupy a permanent place in your collection.
