Don't hate on Britain's dime: The British government could move to cut financial aid to countries that persecute gays, the Huffington Post reports. The Brits have already cut 19 million pounds of aid to Malawi (which received 96 million pounds in aid from the UK in 2010); the African nation jailed two men in May for holding an engagement ceremony. They were given 14 years in prison.
“I will give you a scaring sentence so that the public be protected from people like you, so that we are not tempted to emulate this horrendous example,” the judge said.
HuffPo reports that Sam Dick, head of a UK gay rights group, said “Gay taxpayers contribute £40 billion a year to the public purse, including international aid. It is not unreasonable that these questions are asked at the point of awarding aid.”
And PinkPaper.com reports that Prime Minister David Cameron says that homophobic countries will suffer “funding fines” if they persecute gays and lesbians; this only days after he endorsed same-sex marriage at a Conservative Party conference.
International Development Secretary Andrew Mitchell said he's also willing to cut funding to Uganda and Ghana; Uganda is due to get 70 million pounds in aid while Ghana gets 36 million a year. Ghana has promised to bring in measures to “check the menace of homosexuality” while Uganda plans to “punish homosexuality with the death penalty,” PinkPaper reports.
