How can you tell your coffee is gay?
Cuz it spends so much time in the Grindr! Get it?
Or you could just look on the label and if it says Gay Coffee, then it’s Gay Coffee, a new product courtesy of Melissa Krueger owner of Elbow Room Coffee in Williamsburg, MA. Krueger told the Daily Hampshire Gazette the idea came about while she was chatting with friends about the absorption of gay culture into the mainstream. “I bet this coffee is even gay,” her friend joked, but the comment sparked Krueger to come up with some themes and refine the idea with the help of her friend Daniel Rivers, a visiting lecturer in the Study of Women and Gender at Smith College.
Et viola! Krueger came up with some camp names like “Second Date” (a dark roast which wears a label featuring woman carrying moving boxes), “Red Hanky Roast” (a strong, slightly smokey brew that's full bodied and mildly acidic sporting a jeans-clad rump with a red hanky hanging out of the back pocket) and “Weekend Pass” (a medium/dark blend with a picture of a cute, blonde sailor). With the campy pics on the front and historical facts about gay culture on the back, Gay Coffee was born.
And it developed quickly. Kruger debuted her new line on October 2 at the Castro Street fair and is already getting international orders. A good idea with great design and one percent of sales going to a good cause – donated to the National Lesbian Gay Bisexual Task Force? What can we say, but that we’d like a Second Date? Hot. With lotsa cream and sugar.
