LGBT advocates are going gaga over Lady Gaga's performance at the Video Music Awards. The lady showed up dressed as her alter ego (and boyfriend) Jo Calderone. There are even rumors that Gaga was packing!
Jo talked about his relationship with Gaga, calling her “fucking crazy,” and repeating some of the same concerns Gaga's detractors bring up about her.
“And what's with the hair?” s/he asked. “At first it was sexy but now I'm just confused.”
A couple of times while talking to MTV News about Gaga's performance, the star's creative director, Laurieann Gibsoon, seemed almost like she was going to cry. When asked about Jo Calderone, Gibson said, “The idea of her being a performance artist—and it's starting the performance on the red carpet and the idea that the performance never ends for her—is the first time I've experienced this with an artist. I love it. That's something that is specific to her, and the whole night was the performance, and it was important that Jo was a part of the whole night.”
Calderone, however, told a different story. “[Gaga's] pissed at me now. She said, ‘If you really love me, you’ll go instead of me. And you’ll get in that spotlight.’ So I did. I’m not a singer, an actor or anything, I’m just a guy...”
Lady Gaga wasn't the only one playing with gender at the VMAs, though. Lil Wayne was running around in leopard print jeggings. (That's jeans + leggings for those not in the know.) Kevin Hart wore an A.L.C. leather jacket. And Kanye wore a women’s Céline shirt at Coachella.
