With same-sex marriage now legal in New York and less than three weeks until the starting date, we've run aground. Or at least, the media seems to think so. But the New York City clerk's office says they've seen a 20 percent increase in applicants since June 27.
Obviously, since the law was just passed, and isn't even in full effect yet, all the applications for a marriage license, including the ones online, still say “Bride” and “Groom.” It's “not known” whether or not this was a deterrent. So perhaps if the forms said Spouse 1 and Spouse 2 (or something), the increase would have been more than 20 percent, but who knows?
A graphic designer named Sandi Rowe who plans to marry next year suggested that wedding businesses also change the wording on their marketing material.
“I know things take time and being that there is only one option, if it was important for me to be married on July 25th, I would fill out the form as is,” she said.
City Council spokesman Jamie McShane told reporters that forms accommodating all marriages would be available by sometime on Tuesday.
