Beginner Perfect
Though this isn't the sort of toy that will be useful for a majority of people for longer than a few uses, it is a great introduction, or re-introduction to anal play. If you need something just over the size of an average finger this toy is perfect. The anti-bacterial properties more than make up for the shortcomings in this reviewer's opinion.

Pros
User friendly, small, forgiving, anti-bacterial properties
Cons
Unusual smell, extremely bendy
About a year ago Sigel and I talked about what we would like to do to spice up our relationship. We both realized early on that if we were going to open our marriage we needed to keep moving forward so that the marriage would grow stronger rather than weakening with neglect. One of the areas we had dabbled in for many years was anal play. A combination of faulty information and bad habits prevented us for many years...enter EF and the vast amounts or proper and safe information about making anal play fun!
I decided to try the Anal Starter by Doc Johnson. It is small, measuring in at a little over 6 inches in total length with 4 and a half inches actually insertable comfortably. It is a slim toy at only a little over 3 inches around so it didn't cause my ass to clench up in fear! The flare at the end of the toy is adequate for a beginner to prevent the disappearance of the toy but for extra safety it can be placed in any harness or held firmly by a partner. It won't cause wrist or anus strain due to weight as this little guy is only 5.5 ounces!
The toy is made of sil-a-gel and as such does have a unique smell that, unfortunately, will not wash away as it is there to cover the smell of the base component materials. It can be irritating to some sensitive noses but considering where the toy is meant to be used it can actually be a blessing; as even after much use the toy has never smelled like ass. Sil-a-gel is latex free, phthalates free and has an anti-bacterial property that protects the user but purists will want to use a condom if sharing the toy just for peace of mind. Warm water and mild soap is all that is needed to keep this baby clean but you could also boil, dishwasher sanitize or use a commercial cleaner followed by a rinse. The color is particularly appealing and began a love affair with purple toys for me.
This toy has a very small head and a lot of give making it perfect for scared asses or those learning to overcome previously bad experiences with anal pleasure. The entire toy is very bendy and this can prove to be a problem for solo insertion but here's a word of advice: If you find the toy bending and twisting away from your intended target, SLOW DOWN. Add some more lube and stimulate the anal rim a bit more until you find yourself relaxing and getting even more aroused. For anal play you should be aroused and ready BEFORE play and not relying on the arousal to happen after you insert something. Once you relax and your body is ready you should find the toy cooperating more.
The anal starter will not be a toy you will use forever, it's a starter toy. After a few weeks, (or even days!) you may find that the toy is easily inserted but you don't have the same level of sensation as you did previously. This simply means you are ready to graduate to longer or more girthy toys. To be honest I view this toy as a substitute for a finger as it is just slightly bigger than one. It has more give than a finger and no pesky fingernail to deal with! For those players who just don't want their finger up their partner's (or their own) ass, this is a great little toy. I use it if I have not been having anal pleasure for a while and my body is remembering all the horrible times!
For guys this toy can be a great start as it is long enough to reach most prostates and especially for those users who have swollen or super sensitive prostates this has enough give and is small enough to be comfortable. It won't leave you feeling bruised like a larger more rigid toy can.
This is a very small toy that can be hidden just about anywhere. It does look like a tiny finger sized purple or green penis sans testes so travel friendly it isn't particularly. Still it can be rolled into a pair of socks or panties and remain concealed for most travel inspections.
Sil-a-gel is compatible with all types of lube. If the user wants to use a condom with the toy something like a finger cot (like restaurants use to cover and keep bandages dry) or a toy cover will work just fine.

Experience
I have had the Anal Starter for over a year and it still looks as good as it did the day I got it in the mail. Not a bad recommendation, as I see it, given the crazy amount of use this thing has gotten.
The toy has a few raised edges and ridges meant to imitate the veins and skin wrinkles of a real penis. I found them to be pretty difficult to feel which was perfect for me as I have discovered that my vagina craves textures but my ass loathes them. The smoothness of the toy was accentuated by the lube making it the first pleasurable experience I had had with anal play!
Though the toy did, initially, say put during PIV sex and orgasm very quickly it began to slide out easily. As I said it's perfect as a starter but you should outgrow it pretty quickly. Afer that it will be an amazing warm up toy if you take some time off of anal play.
I, personally, have never used this toy vaginally as it is way to slender and textureless to appeal to me for that type of play. For a player who needs an incredibly slende and short proce it would work amazingly well vaginally, I would presume. As always if you plan to use the toy for both types of sex cover it with a small condom or toy condom just to be on the safe side.

While you won't be using this for long it does make for a great starter anal toy. it is porous, however, so sharing isn't going to be a great idea. A condom solves the issue but the toy is rather slim and small.
