Sexy spades large - glass plug discontinued by Doc Johnson - review by Bill220

If size is your thing, please read on because you need to consider this plug. If it's not, maybe take a look at one of the smaller versions that are offered Medium, Small.

This plug is intended for anal use. I bought it specifically for daily, long term (4-5 hours) use and stretching. It serves that purpose well, but I don't think I'd use it for thrusting due to the hardness, size and shape. Same goes for vaginal use, but I don't have a vagina so I can't say for sure.

The Sexy Spades line of plugs are very pleasing to the eye. So much so, that I've considered leaving mine out on my desk for use as a paperweight or decoration, but I don't think that my wife would appreciate that.

Being that it's constructed from tempered glass, there's no give to it, which isn't an issue for me but it might be for some given its size. It may be a bit of a challenge even if you've previously inserted silicone or rubber toys of the same diameter. Glass is also great if you're into temperature play. I like warming mine up in hot tap water prior to insertion. If you like cold temp play, it'd be great for that too.

This plug is aptly named because the head of it is shaped like a spade. One look at the toy will tell you that the maximum diameter is reached rather quickly, so be prepared for it. Once you get past the 2-3/8" head, you are greeted with a pleasant pop (I've come to enjoy this), then on down to the nice, fat 1-1/4" neck and ultimately to the flat, round base.

Due to its size and shape, I would recommend it only to those more experienced with size. Since the taper is very abrupt, it would be difficult to grow into this plug, so to speak. The traditional cone shaped plugs are more suited to that.

I bought this plug specifically for the large size and it doesn't disappoint. I have no problem with insertion after I've warmed up with a cone shaped plug (in center of photo below), which takes me a minute or two to work in where it stays for 1/2 hour or so prior to swapping it out for the Sexy Spades.





For whatever reason, I find the Sexy Spades to be less comfortable than the Sasha Grey Signature Series glass plug, which I recently reviewed. If you look at both side by side, they are nearly identical, with the Sasha Grey having a bit smaller head and slightly narrower neck. The bases are exactly the same. I can keep the Sasha Grey in a lot longer, walk around and do other things more comfortably than with the Sexy Spades. However, I use them both equally because I prefer the feel of the fatter neck that the Sexy Spades offers.

Glass toys are compatible with any lube and are really easy to clean. Hot water and liquid antibacterial soap do the job well. If desired, you could boil this toy or put it in the dishwasher, but I don't go to those lengths because I don't share my toys. When using silicone lube with this toy, I sometimes have to use clarifying shampoo to get the silicone off and then wash again with the antibacterial soap. This is more of an issue with the lube than it is the toy.

The Sexy Spades packaging is adequate for shipping purposes but the box is made from a thin, see through plastic, which is very flimsy, as is the plastic tray that the plug rests in. I threw the outer box away and kept the inner tray for storage. For comparison, I have a Sasha Grey Signature Series plug (also made by Doc Johnson) that came in a nice, black box with a foam insert that protects the plug. The Sasha Grey was a bit more expensive, which might explain the differences in packaging.

Silicone lubricant is the way to go with glass. I have used two different brands of water based, and one silicone lube with this toy and prefer the latter. It makes insertion easier, lasts for hours, and makes long term use very comfortable. The water based lubes dry out very quickly, which can make moving around and removal rather uncomfortable after it has dried out.
