Use

The Tantus Acute is a pure silicone dildo of average length and girth, angled with small ridges on the shaft and a bulbous head. Because of its design and small-to-average size, it is suited to a number of purposes; anal or vaginal penetration being the most likely of these roles. It can also be used for practicing/simulating fellatio, with a strap-on (with the appropriate O-ring attachment) or even as a paperweight! (Though this last purpose isn't nearly as exciting)

To use this toy for penetration, it is important that you start with a clean toy. Since silicone can attract lint, especially the shiny kind that makes up this toy, a quick soapy wash will suffice nicely. If you wish to cover it with a condom for easier clean-up, ensure the condom is not lubricated with silicone lube as it can be incompatible with the toys material. Speaking of lube, it is a good idea to use some, and definitely so if using anally.

From there on, it is mostly your own choice as to how you use it. If it is your first dildo, or you are not used to being penetrated by a toy or otherwise, please proceed slowly and with caution. Anally speaking, the bulbous head of this toy might be a bit of a shock if you insert it too quickly; this was my first sex toy, and I had never done anything anally before. Just take it slowly if you find it uncomfortable. Trust what your body tells you.

Material / Texture

Ahh, silicone. Lovely, lovely silicone. If you are familiar with Tantus, you know they are trustworthy manufacturers of high quality, body safe silicone toys. The Acute is no different; it is firm, smooth and glossy, and ever so slightly tacky to the bare touch (which is normal). It is odorless, tasteless, phthalate free and generally ideal.

Seriously though, it's made of great stuff. I recommend it as a first toy not just because of its design, but its ideal safety rating; you shouldn't have any reactions to pure silicone, and I trust Tantus.

Again, its texture is smooth, and the bumps along the shaft are not drastic by any means, so the stimulation is mainly delivered by the head. However, I found this to be just fine for my purposes. This dildo is definitely on the firmer side; it is flexible but will hold its own for single handed strap-on use. Don't expect anything squishy and flaccid like jelly!

Design / Shape / Size

[Product dimensions: 6" length, 5" insertable. 4" circumference, 1.25" diameter.]
I have to say, I was not disappointed with the design of the Acute. It's not too big, but big enough for beginners and those who don't want a large toy. The shape is what makes it shine; the slightly bulbous head combined with the curvy shaft allows it to pinpoint all of the right areas. In spite of its smoothness, lack of surface texture and relatively small size, it's very stimulating. I found it to be quite effective. I would have liked it to be slightly longer though.

Also, it has a flared base which makes it safe for anal play; this base also allows it to be used securely with an O-ring harness. (according to what I've read, at least) This toy is not realistic, which I like. It's not discreet, as it definitely looks like a dildo, but it isn't a giant flesh-toned veiny beast. One should be able to transport it safely when traveling, as it is small and has no electronic parts.

Performance

I like this toy for its user-friendliness, relative ease of use, and targeted action. I believe a beginner could start with this toy, as long as they take things slowly, and the material is one of the gold standards of sex toys. I found that its sleek texture, while it made lubricant bead up, made for easy insertion, and the bulging head felt great upon entry and removal. It's very easy to clean and maintain, and made for an excellent first toy. Plus, the colors are nice, particularly the midnight purple.

Care and Maintenance

The Acute, being made of platinum silicone, is very easy to care for. Cleaning is as simple as using mild soap and water (or antibacterial soap if you desire), as pure silicone is nonporous. To sterilize, you can choose several options:

Bleaching in a 10% solution of bleach in water: Wipe down and rinse afterwards.
Boiling: Boil for upwards of ten minutes. (you can boil for longer as silicone is very resilient, but 5 minutes should be adequate)
Dishwasher: Top rack, no soap.

Storage is equally simple. Keep your silicone toys away from composite materials. It's always good practice to keep your toys separate, as some poorer quality materials can ruin the whole party. Regardless of how you store your Acute, it will likely attract lint, hairs and dust bunnies. That is the inevitable truth of silicone, but a small price to pay.

One other disadvantage is silicones incompatibility (or perhaps over-compatibility) with silicone lubes. Unfortunately, silicone lubricant can bond to the surface of silicone toys, making them permanently tacky. This does depend somewhat on the quality of the silicone, as well as the quality of the lube. Be sure to do a spot test on the bottom of the base if you must use silicone lube. The reaction should be immediate, and the spot will become gooey (you should be able to scrape it off with a fingernail). To be safe, use water based lubes.

Packaging

The Acute, like most Tantus toys, comes packaged in a clear plastic box with the name of the toy, some decorative colors and information. Inside of this clear package is a molded plastic encasement which nestles the toy. This case makes for a good display for anyone selling the toy, but is completely indiscreet. It does make a good gift box due to its shape, as it can be easily wrapped. (Just don't give it to someone in front of their relatives, etc.)

As for storage, the case isn't the best as it needs to be reassembled, which is impractical at times. However, the inner shells might be useful in keeping the toy supported and separated from the rest of your collection, so keep it for that purpose if you wish.

Personal comments

This toy was my first; it opened up my eyes (among other things) to a world of pleasure and self-exploration. One doesn't forget things like that, and I feel that the Acute is a good choice for many people. The price is reasonable, it's versatile, the quality is superb, and it's definitely safe.
Follow-up commentary
Although this is a 2-month follow-up review, I have had the Acute for quite a bit longer. I still really like it for its smoothness and angled shaft, and I still feel it's great for less advanced users, either anally or vaginally.

I have become accustomed to larger toys with more texture since my last review of this toy, however, so my biggest complaint about the Acute is that it is a bit short in the insertable length category.

In spite of that, I would buy another if something ever happened to my current one. It's a great standby toy for when you want something simple and stimulating.

Excellent review. How squishy is the silicone? We have a few Tantus toys, and when we bought the VIP, we were surprised (in a horrible way) at how stiff the silicone was with a 1 1/2 inch toy.
  • Contributor: Clandestine
While I have not felt the VIP before, I can imagine it being similar, as it seems like most of Tantus' silicone products I've felt (minus supersoft/O2) are of similar firmness. I can't say for sure, though.

It's certainly not very yielding, though... Definitely on the harder side of firmness.

Great review! Acute was my first silicone toy ever, and I still enjoy it. I find that it's really good for warming up. I wish I had the chance to get one of the neon colors they have now.

Definitely! I would get the green in a heartbeat.
