Fire and Ice (Pink Icicle)

Diamond Lip Gloss is long lasting and moisturizing. It would be perfect for someone who wants lots of shimmer and shine, and a light, yummy scent. Unfortunately, it didn't create the look I was going for, and it caused a burning feeling on my sensitive skin.

Use

Diamond Gloss by Cake Beauty is a sheer, sparkly, scented lipgloss. I am reviewing the Pink Icicle shade. It adds shine and shimmer, but not colour, and can be worn alone or layered over a lipstick. In my opinion, this gloss is best suited for younger women and/or evening wear. Because it doesn't add colour, it should work with any skin tone.

Cake products are paraben free. If you have sensitive skin, you may want to avoid this gloss. It isn't intended to be a tingling or plumping lipgloss, but it caused a burning sensation for me.

Texture / Consistency / Thickness / Viscosity

Other reviewers have complained that this lipgloss has a heavy or sticky texture, but it honestly doesn't bother me. My hair will stick to it, but that happens with any lipgloss. I don't find my lips feel sticky when I rub them together. It feels quite moisturizing, and I like that it is heavy enough to stick around on my lips for a few hours, instead of disappearing within the first 10 minutes like some glosses do. In comparison to my other glosses, the texture is pretty average. To give you a comparison, it feels a bit lighter than my Victoria's Secret lipglosses. The shimmer particles do not feel gritty at all on the lips.

Taste / Aroma

Diamond Lip Gloss is supposed to smell like vanilla cream. It smells exactly like vanilla cake batter. The scent is light, and is only really noticeable during application, and for a few minutes after. This might be a negative for some people, but I'm not a fan of overly strong, sweet lipgloss scents. When I ordered this I was worried the smell might be overwhelming, like the glosses I used to wear as a kid, and I was glad to discover it isn't. The lipgloss isn't really flavoured, and mostly just tastes like lipgloss, with a slight hint of sweetness.

Performance

The gloss adds a lot of shine and sparkle to the lips, but no colour. It reminds me of the glosses I used to wear as a kid. Now, I prefer my glosses to have more of an overall shimmer and sheen, rather than being able to see the individual sparkles. I find it a bit sparkly for everyday, but I would wear this over some pink lipstick for a night out.

Below you can see the gloss swatched on my arm, and on my lips. It looks more sparkly in real life, but unfortunately I wasn't able to fully capture that in the pictures.

I find the applicator dispenses the perfect amount of gloss to cover my lips. The small, angled tip makes it easy to apply the gloss accurately.

The lipgloss is long lasting, and is able to last me 2 to 4 hours before I feel the need to reapply. It won't last all day, or make it through eating or drinking, but I haven't found any lipgloss that does that. I have very dry lips, and the Diamond Gloss is moisturizing enough to satisfy them, though not as moisturizing as a balm. It definitely doesn't dry my lips out any more than they naturally are.

Unfortunately, this gloss causes a burning feeling on my lips, which intensifies the longer I wear it. None of the other reviews I've read have mentioned this. I checked the Cake website to make sure, and there is no mention of this being a plumping gloss, so it must just be my sensitive skin reacting. After researching the ingredients list, I'm pretty sure that the Rosemary Leaf Extract is causing my issue. It is known to cause irritation or sensitizing or toxic reactions on skin. Since no one else seems to have had a problem with this it will probably be fine for most people, but if you know you have sensitive skin, I'd suggest staying away.

If you want to completely remove the gloss before it wears off, you're going to have to wash it off or use a makeup remover wipe. When wiped with a kleenex some residue was left behind on mu lips.

Packaging

The lipgloss is packaged in a clear plastic tube, with a silver screw off cap, and a doe-foot applicator. It contains 0.4 ounces, which is a pretty standard size for a lipgloss. The tube can fit into a pocket, or easily be tossed into a purse. The label is printed in white on a clear sticker, which makes it really hard to read the ingredient list. Luckily, the full list is available on the product page. The label just says "lip gloss" and doesn't have the shade printed anywhere. It also has the name of the company, and their address and website. Cake products are made in Canada. There is a symbol indicating that it expires 12 months after opening. The lipgloss arrived sealed in plastic for shipping.

Follow-up commentary
I obviously haven't used this again since I was allergic. I ended up giving another tube of this to my best friend, and she loved it. It didn't irritate her skin, and she loves the scent -she says it smells like marshmallows. She hadn't tried any Cake products before this, but I know she has bought a couple of other things from their line since she tried this gloss.
