The Wartenberg wheel was initially a medical device that was invented by Robert Wartenberg to test nervous reactions when rolled across the skin. More commonly now, it is used for sensory play. It seems harmless enough, although, when I pulled it out of the box that my husband knew came from EdenFantasys, I got quite the funny look. Anyone could use it.... there is no experience needed.
The handle is made of plastic, and the wheel is metal. I've only had it for about a week now, but just from looking at it, I don't think it would last forever. I haven't taken it apart to see how the plastic attaches to the metal, but it doesn't seem like it's all that sturdy. It does hold up to being put under quite a bit of pressure though. The wheel itself is between the size of a quarter and a nickel, and the handle is about 6 inches long.
The blindfold that is included is your typical standard issue cheap blindfold. There is nothing fancy about it.
The spokes on the wheel are good for a tickle when used lightly, but sharp enough to cause slight pain when used under pressure. It won't puncture skin, but if dragged under pressure, will leave white scratch marks. We used it once, and didn't really see what all the hype was about. Instead of getting me revved up, it made me relaxed and tired. We had it sitting on the bedside table, and our 2 year old got ahold of it, and now uses it as a 'tool' to fix his toy cars. Do I regret ordering it? No. It's something I had been wondering about and wanting to try for a while now. It was worth the try, for sure. It just wasn't for us.
It came in a box that was a little bigger than a box for a tube of toothpaste, and the blindfold was inside the box in a plastic bag. It had no instructions, or information on the product.
If anyone asked me if they should give the wartenberg wheel a try, I would tell them to go for it. Although my experience wasn't positive, it wasn't negative either.
Follow-up commentaryI still don't like it3 months after original review
This little 'tool' hasn't even been used since the original review. I suppose it was alright for a one-time experience, so that I don't have to wonder any more about whether I'd like it---I guess it's just not our thing.

I think the wheel from the Stockroom that Eden carries would be more fun. It has longer, larger points. Your comment about your son using it to "fix" his cars was cute!
