Live Sex Show is an incredibly unique DVD brought to you by Courtney Trouble. Courtney who has directed 12 full length features has won countless awards for her strides in bringing queer porn to front center---she also created a site for pornography as well as photography called NoFauxxx.com.

The DVD itself is exactly what it sounds like, instead of perfectly cut scripted scenes, you are given a live sex show. With a live audience to share in on the excitement, 200 witnessed this show in San Francisco’s Masturbate-a-Thon festivities. Shot more like an indie art film this feature has a lot of depth and allows you to feel like you are there.

Starting off with a strip tease you are eased into the experience and not pummeled with sexual imagery right off that bat. With this you get every day people in a natural experience, everyone there to put on a show from more than the pay check. There is different looks to everyone, people you would see on an everyday basis. You truly feel like they are enjoying themselves and not just making noises on cue. Along with the show you hear the crowd shouting and clapping and cheering a long with the acts, enjoying being part of it all.

While the film is heavily queer friendly, there is a scene with guy and girl action. So there is something for everyone if that’s not your thing. You also get masturbation, toy use, and the big feature gang bang at the end. Nina Hartley is the star of this gang bang having a career in porn that has not gone unnoticed since the 70’s.

Most of the film is shot with different filters and vignette styled edges, without it being so artsy you lose the sex completely. My biggest complaint though is at times the vignette does edge out some of the performers and makes things too dark---it was very rare but could have been prevented. I think the lighting was just the natural stage lighting that would be there for any concert so I understand it and I am sure fake lighting would have made it a little uncomfortable and maybe too sterile for this type of movie. The flow of this moves pretty quickly so you aren’t stuck on one scene for too long, you meet different people along the way without growing tired of the same thing over and over.

There is no behind the scenes or extras to this DVD which was a really big disappointment. I would have loved to hear people talk about the idea of this and what other happenings were at this event. I think it could have gained a lot from behind the scenes features as a whole.

I really enjoyed the idea of this porn and applaud its originality but I don’t think it’s something to masturbate to but more of an experience. I watched this as I would a documentary; it was very interesting almost like watching human nature. I feel like being there to watch it all was probably the big turn on, everyone there for a reason, with the same intent. A lot of others can take something from this feature and apply it to their movies. Originality is always king.
