The big end - butt plug discontinued by Doc Johnson - review by pootpootpoot

Doc Johnson's The Big End is a silicone butt plug of considerable size. While it may be intimidating, don't let it scare you off! The sleek design and plush material make this a good plug for those with even minimal experience in anal play. This toy can be used solo or with a partner, and is appropriate for those of all genders.

While I do not own a harness myself, I suspect that this toy could be used with one, although its weight and kinda-bendy neck could make it a challenge. The wide base is excellent for those who are paranoid about 'losing' their toys internally, and the flexible silicone is a great material for extended wear. While this toy could be safely used for thrusting and/or vaginal insertion, we found that the material and design made it a bit difficult to thrust with, and vaginally it just wasn't as good as my G-spot toys.

The Big End is made of pure silicone, which rates a perfect ten on Eden's Material Safety Scale. Silicone is an excellent material for several reasons: it is easy to clean (simply boil for three minutes, toss it in the dishwasher, or use a toy-cleaning product); it is non-porous and can be completely sterilized, and is thus suitable for sharing between partners; and it can be used for temperature play (soak it in a bowl of warm or cool water before use). The Big End also has no smell or taste, so although it is not intended for oral use, you could certainly choose to use it that way (just be careful with your teeth, as they could damage the material).



There is no texture at all - the entire toy is smooth and non-porous, which makes for easy insertion, and the toy's girth allows for good sensation even without any bumps or ridges. As you can see in my pictures, there is considerable flex at the base of the toy, and the base itself is soft as well. The body, however, is more rigid and difficult to bend, though it still has some give. Here you can see how much the neck bends when no pressure is placed on the body:



The amount of flex is excellent for an anal toy - the base is soft and comfortable, while the body is stiff enough for easy insertion but soft enough so that it conforms to your body slightly. This toy would be comfortable for those not yet ready for unforgiving materials like glass but want something more rigid than jelly.

The design is what really makes this toy. While The Big End does have significant girth, the tapered tip allows for smooth, easy insertion, building in size gradually as it reaches the neck. This makes it a great choice for those who are looking to get used to larger toys without discomfort, and the size will make it appealing to more advanced anal players. Here it is compared to some EF freebies and a few of my other toys:




The base is quite wide, and very flexible. Depending on the size of your butt, it can be a bit uncomfortable for long-term wear, but it is never painful.

The color (your choice of charcoal-grey or purple) is very nice, with a slight swirl throughout the toy, but keep in mind that it's also a big glittery as well. You can't tell as much on the body of the toy, but the bottom of the base (which is smoother than the body) shows the sparkle really nicely.

The Big End is not at all discreet, and its size will probably draw attention if you leave it out. I keep mine in a Lockable Sex Toy Case, inside a toy bag to keep it out of contact with my other silicone toys. Unfortunately it does not come with its own bag, but you could easily make do with some fabric or a spare T-shirt.

This toy is great! As I mentioned before, the size is pretty intimidating, but it's excellent for those who wish to train themselves to take bigger toys. If you find the whole toy is too big for you at first (I wouldn't blame you!) simply insert it an inch or so at a time until you reach your limit, using plenty of lube of course! Because it's so big, it will also likely be useful for a long time, unlike some "beginner" toys which quickly become too small to be of use as you advance to larger toys.

The one thing about this toy that isn't perfect is the base - it's huge! While this is excellent for people like me who are paranoid about 'losing' anal toys, it can be a bit uncomfortable for long-term wear if you have larger buttocks and want to insert it as far as it can go.

This toy is made completely from pure silicone, which is an excellent toy material. It rates a perfect 10 on Eden Fantasys's Toy Material Safety Guide, and for good reason! It can be sterilized (either by boiling or using bleach), and it's non-porous, making it great for sharing between partners (or even just friends!).

There are a lot of options when it comes to cleaning silicone toys, including:
- Putting the toy in the top rack of your dishwasher
- Boiling it
- Hand-washing it with antibacterial soap and hot or warm water
- Using toy-cleaning wipes or fluid

Silicone does attract lint and hair, so make sure to give the toy a quick rinse before each use!

The Big End does have a fair amount of drag, so you'll definitely want to use lubricant with it. As silicone toys are non-compatible with silicone-based lube, your best bet is water-based lubricant. If you are male-bodied you could also use oil-based lubricant, but those who are female-bodied should steer clear - oil can disrupt the delicate pH of the vagina.

The packaging for this toy is pretty minimal. It consists of basic clamshell packaging and a cardboard insert. It's a good deal bigger than the toy, so I wouldn't recommend it for storage, but it does keep the lint off. It is also not at all discreet - you can see the product through the packaging, and the manufacturer's name is a bit of a giveaway as well.




The back of the packaging has a blurb about the product, and at the bottom (not pictured) it instructs you to go to the Doc Johnson website for warranty and product information. If you provide some information about your product, you can receive a one-year warranty for the plug. Pretty neat!

This is my partner's favorite plug, for all the reasons I've listed above. Unfortunately, I purchased this toy with the intent to use it for long-term wear, and it just doesn't work well for that purpose. For me, the base is too wide to be worn comfortably for more than twenty minutes or so, and though my partner puts up with it because he loves the toy so much, we've considered trying to cut it down so that it would feel more natural.

While I originally thought this toy was too big for me, I was surprised to find that it was actually quite comfortable and even pleasant (see "Experience" below). The diameter is perfect for my partner, and he reports that it provides nice stimulation and a constant "filling" feeling when worn for extended periods of time, and he has not yet experienced it slipping or falling out during use.

When my partner asked me to get him something "big", I thought this would be the perfect toy to teach him a lesson (that he should do some shopping himself instead of leaving it all to me!). I was sure that The Big End would be bigger than he expected and bigger than he was used to, as that was certainly the case for me. When I unpacked it, I nearly gasped - it was just so big! No way this thing was going in my butt - this would be strictly for him.

Cut to a week or two later, and we're messing around with some toys. Long story short, it ended up inside me, and I gotta say it really wasn't so bad! The plug itself was extremely comfortable, and while it was a bit longer than I'd like it is apparently great for my partner. It really didn't feel very wide at all, just filling, and I didn't experience any discomfort while on all fours.

Once I stood up, however, that changed. The wide base pushed my cheeks apart a bit and it was pretty uncomfortable. I could only wear it for about twenty minutes before I got fed up with it and removed it. My partner has a smaller tush and didn't have much of a problem with spreading, but still found it a bit uncomfortable.

Overall: Great plug, just maybe not for long-term wear. I'd say give it a try unless you have literally no experience with anal play.
