Head Teacher Suggests Modest Dress for Students to Protect Them from Pedophiles

Parents of students at King's Park Secondary School, in Glasgow, Scotland, are rather perturbed with a letter they received from the school's head teacher. It asks parents to be sure their kids aren't wearing short skirts or tight pants, so as to protect them from pedophiles.

As with that cop in Toronto that sparked a worldwide movement, the intentions are good. The head teacher had received word that a convicted pedophile may have been photographing the students, and wanted to be sure the kids were safe. But just like with the cop, critics are outraged that the head teacher would suggest the children’s attire be brought into the equation.

Eileen Prior, chief executive of Scottish Parent Teacher Council, said, “Creating a link between school uniform and pedophilia seems to be a dangerous and unhelpful one for everyone involved. It implies that young people are in some way responsible for the activities of pedophiles, which is an extremely dangerous argument and one which has echoes of the comments sometimes made around rapists and women's dress. If there is evidence of activity by a pedophile in the area, then police and parents should be informed and involved.”
