On Monday, the Greek government, which had enough problems already, pissed off a lot of people when they declared pedophilia a disability. Nicholas Paphitis of the AP writes “The National Confederation of Disabled People called the action ‘incomprehensible,’ and said pedophiles are now awarded a higher government disability pay than some people who have received organ transplants.”
The AP also includes kleptomaniacs and exhibitionists among the recently declared disabled and the Labor Ministry has also expanded the list to include pyromaniacs, compulsive gamblers, sadomasochists and fetishists; the newly included categories “for purposes of medical assessment and used as a gauge for allocating financial assistance.”
Greece, remember, is a country that’s already having financial difficulties and independent welfare programs that get state grants have already been suffering in this economy. According to the AP story heart transplant patients get 80% disability pay; the new list will give “pyromaniacs and pedophiles disability pay up to 35%.”
Yannis Vardakastanis, the leader of the National Coalition for Disabled People, who is blind, said “It’s really not serious to grant Peeping Toms a 20-30 percent disability rate, and 10 percent to diabetics, who have insulin shots four or five times a day.”
Wow. Okay, that is more than a little ridiculous. We can only imagine what he had to say when the press wasn’t listening.
