Fairy Mini Vs. Hitachi Magic Wand

While the Fairy Mini appeared to offer many advantages over its competitor the Hitachi Magic Wand, I found that in practice, the features did not amount to a whole lot. While the Mini offers smaller size, higher speeds and a multi-speed dial, my Hitachi is still my #1 choice!

extremely useful review
I was drawn to the Fairy Mini because of its smaller size, sliding dial speeds (vs two-speed Hitachi), its power and of course the pretty pink. I ended up supplementing the Fairy with a Hitachi as I was interested in having more variety in attachments and wanted to do a comparison between the two.

After using it in comparison to the Hitachi, here are some of the differences I can see between the two:

Size: Fairy Mini clearly has the Hitachi beat on this front. The Fairy Mini is around a foot long and has a significantly smaller head than the Hitachi. The Hitachi is significantly thicker, longer and heavier than the Fairy, so this puts it at an advantage if you want to hold it in your hand and control it that way and especially if you are looking to use it with a partner. That being said, the Hitachi has many more attachments designed for its size, so if you're looking for fun attachments to spice things up, you should probably go with the Hitachi.

Noise: At its lowest setting, the Fairy is a low rumble. At its highest speed, I think it sounds like a dentist drill with a high pitched whine. I would hesitate to use it around others at even the lowest setting unless you have VERY LOUD music playing and a closed door. Hitachi has a smaller range of frequencies and that goes for its volume frequencies as well. I think it's slightly louder but on the highest speed the Fairy would definitely be easier to hear given how high pitched it is.

Materials: Both have a hard plastic wand and a rubberized head. I clean it with soap and water but I would hesitate to share as it seems to be a porous material. You could clean the base with an antibacterial wipe.

Controls: Given the Fairy's multi-speed dial, I really expected to love that functionality and while the Fairy should have the advantage in this category, it did not end up affecting my opinion as much as I expected. For me, the Hitachi's two speeds were both more satisfying than the Fairy's multiple speeds. That being said, I think the Hitachi would benefit with a third speed that is in-between the lowest and highest, but it's not enough of an issue for me to give preference to the Fairy.

Power: I'd say the Fairy is comparable to the Hitachi in terms of power but the Fairy has a faster vibration on its highest speed. That being said, as the speed increases, it seems like the vibrations end up being more surface level and in my opinion the highest speed is a little too much. If you hold both in your hands on the highest speed you will feel the vibrations go up a little past your wrist. That being said, I feel like the Hitachi has a better quality vibration but it may also be that the Hitachi covers a larger portion of your anatomy. Either way, I feel the vibrations more with the Hitachi when both are on their highest speed.
Experience
My experience with the Fairy was okay. It certainly did its job and it did it pretty quickly. Given the small size of the head you can get some serious direct stimulation. That being said, I found that I really preferred the large size of the Hitachi better as it really produced much stronger stimulation when it worked on a larger area. I found the extra speed that the Fairy delivers over the Hitachi to be okay (in fact I preferred the lower speed of the Hitachi). I also did not find as many accessories for the smaller size of the Fairy (and some of those attachments for the Hitachi are truly amazing!)

Overall, I favor the Hitachi and it is definitely be the "go-to" toy whereas the Fairy is more for use when you want something smaller and less cumbersome.

You answered absolutely every question I had when I was comparing this and the Hitachi---if you had written it before I bought my Fairy Mini! D: I was surprised to hear that the dial cont rol isn't as good as you had thought it would be---I'm sure this comparison will be really helpful for everyone!

This is a great review. I have the Hitachi - and love it - but I have wondered about some of these other wands. This review confirms that I should stick with my Magic Wand. When you already have the best, there is no need for anything else

I really appreciate the way you described the sound difference, because most reviews seem to be avoiding the simple question of which one is louder. Also, good description on the difference between vibration intensities. I'm still a bit torn on which to buy... but I think you're attachment arugument may have one me over to the hitachi.
